New Book on Public Education
Public Ed Dread: How Wishful Thinking and Good Intentions Reformed Academics Right Out of Our Public Schools is a must-read for concerned parents, homeschoolers, grassroots reformers, and concerned citizens alike trying to make sense of American public education.
This book was written by a teacher with years of experience in the system. The author taught in a low-income, Title I failing school in California where she experienced the politics of whole language and No Child Left Behind. She also taught in a middle-class, suburban school where she witnessed the effects of the accountability reform movement on students. Weaved throughout the book are the author's personal experiences from her time teaching in polar opposite public schools.
The author's unique perspective on public education in action is eye-opening and comprehensive. It shows that no schools are safe from the perils of the de-emphasis on academics. This book provides the background necessary to understand how our public schools came to embrace the non-academic values it does now.
Public Ed Dread explains the evolution of the methods, objectives, and policies of public education through the following chapters:
Chapter 1: The School of Wishful Thinking and Magic Bullets
Chapter 2: Dumbed Down But Equal
Chapter 3: The New 3 Rs-Race, Class, Gender, & Social Justice
Chapter 4: Fuzzy Thinking
Chapter 5: An Education in Cooperation?
Chapter 6: Pimping Out Public Education for Power and Profit
Chapter 7: End the Dread

About the Author Bridgette Wallis taught in public schools for over seven years. She is currently persuing a graduate degree in educational psychology while raising her son.
Shouldn’t it be “How Communist Radicals Manufacturing Drones of Our Children Destroyed Public Education”?
I want to dispute the “goodm intentions” part. I no longer give socialists the benefit of the doubt (because there isn’t any in my mind) about their intentions. They’re on the side of Satan.
I agree. They seem more intent on reversing our literacy rate and destroying our kid’s ability to reason.
The very idea of public education was put forth by Marxists, so like Marxism it will not work to do anything except indoctrinate.
Government schools are about indoctrinating children with government approved values, which today is pure socialism/marxism.
Don’t come to me with the “my school isn’t like that”, because if you believe that, you are a useful idiot.
What “good intentions?”
Government schools have been based on evil intentions from the start.
My book is on the way, so I will see what the author thinks constitutes “good intentions.”
The “persuit” of the graduate degree?
Thanks wayne_shrugged. Those intentions? They weren’t good either.
I wrote this book to show that good intentions of all kinds, including reforms meant to "fix" public education, will end the same way--badly. The whole idea of public schools is fundamentally wrong. It does not matter who is doing the reforming either (which I think happens to be a common mistake of conservatives).
This book addresses why public education hasn't worked in the past and why it won't work now. More importantly, the book tells how and why the common practices of public education (cooperative learning, mixed-ability classes, and social justice, etc.) promote social, not academic aims. Consequently, very few children are getting the type of education promised. There are other options out there. We need to concentrate on promoting those options instead of continuing to try to work within the system we have now.
I taught in both California and Texas in both low-income and middle-class schools. I hope some of you look into my book.
