Archaeologists in northern Greece have found a rare group of ancient graves where farmers were interred with their livestock, a Greek daily reported on Friday.
At least 11 adults and 16 farm animals were found buried together near the town of Mavropigi in the northern region of Macedonia, some 21km from the city of Kozani, Ethnos daily said.
The men, women and a child lay alongside horses, oxen, dogs and a pig in two rows of graves, the area's head archaeologist told the newspaper.
'It is the first time that this strange custom is found at such a scale, and from this particular period of time, the late 6th century and early 5th century BC,' head archaeologist Georgia Karamitrou-Mentesidi said.

I’m thinking maybe the LIVESTOCK was buried with the FARMER...not the other way around.
All had the same disease? Anthrax? So they were done in together?

Im thinking maybe the LIVESTOCK was buried with the FARMER...not the other way around.
Im thinking they all died of disease at the same time and were hastily buried together as the fastest, most economical means of disposal.
Died all around the same time would be my first suspicion, too.
Maybe ‘e was just pinin’ for the Holsteins?
The name “Mavropigi” should mean “black spring.” I don’t know what ethnic group would have been living in that part of Macedonia at that time, whether Macedonians proper or some barbarian tribe (Illyrian or other). This would be within a few decades of Xerxes’ march through the area, but this is rather inland from the route Xerxes would have taken.
Thanks Verginius Rufus.
Here’s another map (link only), “Kocane” (Kozani) is near the top of the kdm, right above the “E” in Macedonia.

Pinin’ for the white wine, most likely, and, heeeey, what if we added pine resin to the wine? That’s gotta be different...
When human remains were found in the wreckage of an overturned ancient vessel, I think it was one of those found at Pisa, the remains of the dead man’s dog were also found. An article about it suggested that the old soldier had jumped in to save his dog, and a letter to the editor pointed out the obvious — that it was probably the other way around. :’)
The family members could have been killed by invaders or raiders, but it seems likely such creeps would have either taken or eaten the livestock. So, as you pointed out, probably disease.
Also goes to show why agribusiness is a net good. We don’t live with our livestock anymore.
