Im thinking they all died of disease at the same time and were hastily buried together as the fastest, most economical means of disposal.
When human remains were found in the wreckage of an overturned ancient vessel, I think it was one of those found at Pisa, the remains of the dead man’s dog were also found. An article about it suggested that the old soldier had jumped in to save his dog, and a letter to the editor pointed out the obvious — that it was probably the other way around. :’)
The family members could have been killed by invaders or raiders, but it seems likely such creeps would have either taken or eaten the livestock. So, as you pointed out, probably disease.
