The name “Mavropigi” should mean “black spring.” I don’t know what ethnic group would have been living in that part of Macedonia at that time, whether Macedonians proper or some barbarian tribe (Illyrian or other). This would be within a few decades of Xerxes’ march through the area, but this is rather inland from the route Xerxes would have taken.
