The name “Mavropigi” should mean “black spring.” I don’t know what ethnic group would have been living in that part of Macedonia at that time, whether Macedonians proper or some barbarian tribe (Illyrian or other). This would be within a few decades of Xerxes’ march through the area, but this is rather inland from the route Xerxes would have taken.

Here’s another map (link only), “Kocane” (Kozani) is near the top of the kdm, right above the “E” in Macedonia.
