For Northern Hemisphere observers, August is usually regarded as "meteor month" with one of the best displays of the year reaching its peak near midmonth. That display is, of course, the annual Perseid Meteor Shower beloved by everyone from meteor enthusiasts to summer campers.
But sky watchers beware: You will be facing a major obstacle in your attempt to observe this years Perseid performance, namely, the moon.

Saw a big one the other night in northern Nevada. Great time of year for sky-watching.
I’m amazed at how clear the sky is 12 miles west of Las Vegas. In moonlight, the desert looks like daylight with stars in the sky, if exposed properly. Meteors are a bonus, but I doubt I’ll capture any this Thursday night.
Staying in Isle of Palms South Carolina this week on vacation and the beach is amazing at night. But even the waxing moon is bright.
Absolutely beautiful on the ocean though.
Isn't it about time that somebody got rid of that sucker so that we can all enjoy the view?
