The Dogs (and Bears, and Camels) of [Civil] War
NYT ^ | July 6, 2011 | CATE LINEBERRY

As Union and Confederate soldiers left the comforts of home for the grim realities of war, many brought along family pets or adopted stray or wild animals, which quickly took on semi-official roles. Regiments from the North and the South kept dogs, cats, horses, squirrels and raccoons as mascots. Some chose more unusual animals, including bears, badgers, eagles, wildcats, even a camel.

Thanks for the clarification re: golden and bald eagles. I knew that juvenile balds have dark feathers on their heads and tails, but I did not know how long until they reached maturity. That explains a lot.

At West Point the summer weight gray uniform was TW trousers and shirt “TW for Tropical Worsted”. It was quite cool as such things went.

I didn't think this story deserved a thread of its own,, so am sticking it here b/c Quartzite is the focus of the news. I wonder if the ghost camels of Hi Jolly will be blamed? ;D ‘State Of Emergency’ In Quartzite

Quartzsite Police Chief Jeff Gilbert has asked the town council to declare a “state of emergency” due to all of the publicity the town has received over the arrest of a reporter at an open meeting in June.

The town council voted 5-0 in favor of the action; Mayor Ed Foster did not attend the emergency meeting Sunday afternoon. Gilbert reportedly said the action was needed because Jennifer Jones was “inciting riots” after videos of her arrest at the meeting sprung up across the Internet. It was not immediately clear what outside assistance, if any, Gilbert seeks to enforce the state of emergency. Check back for further updates.

Quartzite is a most desolate and dirty wide spot in the road. Even more so when they are holding the giant flea market there in the winter.

Looks like someone doesn’t want anyone to know who was getting/writing those $200K checks. ;(

On an earlier, related thread I suggested that this town was dysfunctional. Now it’s looking more like they’re insane!

Correcting my Post #3...It was Gen. Sterling Price who ordered his men to kill that “...damned Yankee buzzard!”
