Pretty bad news
The Vanityville Bugle | June 29, 2011 | 2ndDivisionVet

Posted on 06/29/2011 7:50:49 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Went to my doctor for the first time in awhile and got some bad news. My A1C blood sugar was almost 12 and my blood pressure averaged about 190/110. They wanted to admit me right then and there, but instead gave me a shopping bag full of medications. Since my wife had her stroke I haven't really been taking care of myself and now it's come to a head. If I don't do a complete 180 I'll be dead before the year is out. I have committed to mall walking (exercising) seven days a week for 30 minutes a day and cutting my carbs and sugars drastically. Please pray for me or think of me as I try to save my own life. Thanks!

Read this.

My advice?

Walking is *good*.

Cut the carbs, particularly the pasta / potatoes / bread / etc.

Go with Atkins or The Zone Diet.

Fish oil rocks.

Cinnamon can help your cells become more sensitive to insulin.

I'm not an MD, just a PhD (or an NRD "not a real doctor). But I *do* want to see all fellow FReepers as hale and hearty as possible.

Cheers!

Mr. 2D you’ve got lots of wear left on those tires. Walking is great and you don’t even have to do it all in the mall. I don’t know where you live but wherever it is, outside is good too; you can listen to music or a talk while you walk and you’ll really be enjoying yourself. It’s easily within reach.

So sorry to hear all your bad news and about your wife as well. I remember how hard my mothers stroke was on my father. You can get that blood pressure down and stop eating the sugar and carbs, I know you can. My prayers are with you.

You can do it, and we’re behind you. You mentioned A1C, do you have a monitor? You can get one for free.

Maybe pick up a second hand treadmill (and mount a keyboard on it so you can post here as you walk), then you can stay close to your wife.

You might want to research

raw organic apple-cider vinegar unfiltered.

Take 2-3 teaspoons 2-3 times/day in a glass of water or Orange Juice etc.

My BP was already low for my age but I think just once a day lowered it another 10-20 points.

There’s a list of documented benefits.

One hubby at another site took it 3 times/day and lost 12-20 lbs without changing his eating habits.

Anyway—good stuff and may well be of value to you.

Hugs and prayers anyway.

Your wife needs you, you are now her hero. Get it in your mind that this isn't for your benefit, it's for your wife's.

Eat a LOT of vegetables and raw fruit. Avoid or heavily reduce the salty snacks, meats of any sort, and high calorie drinks. I know, it's tough to do, but as a Vet, you already have the intestinal fortitude to succeed.

If you feel hungry, go outside and take a walk, and enjoy the day, even if it's raining. Good luck and may God bless you both.

Yo 2ndDV, I feel you, brother. It sounds like you know what you need to do. I can recommend a few books to you - PM if you’re interested. I think the change in my life that made the biggest difference was to eat 5-6 meals per day. I kept a food diary for a long time until it was second nature. It’s a daily struggle, and don’t be afraid to get help if you think you need it. Surely you can think of some goals for yourself - short and long term goals are the mark of successful people, and for good reason.

I’m in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was about 100 degrees with high humidity today. I really have to walk inside the air-conditioned mall.

I also have diabetes and it’s a constant struggle. Sometimes you do better than others. Each us is different. There are many foods that I cannot eat because they raise my blood sugar. When I look at them I think, are they worth dying for? Stress also raises my blood sugar. It’s good idea to think about walking in the mall, but I would suggest that you find something you can do around the house. It’s so easy to find an excuse not to go to the mall. And try not to sit without getting up and moving around from time to time.
Unlike many conditions, we can make diabetes much better or worse. I’m just coming out of a down cycle and starting to do better. Getting better control is not easy but it is possible. Please let us know how you are doing.

I would agree with some of the earlier comments. Start gradually, maybe plan on doing a couple of walks instead of one, and build up to longer walks as your body adjusts to it.

I walk the dogs and work in the woods to keep in shape, but I’m in the country.

You need to watch your diet also. I teach spinning and cross fit and I have seen a reverse in many cases of some of my clients that were in really bad shape before taking my classes. Blood sugar dropped, blood pressure back to normal and they are are more active and full of energy now. Some of them are over age 70 close to 80 and in great shape now.

Good luck will pray for you and hope you will take care of yourself.

Is it type 1 or type 2? My wife has type 2. There’s been some news about diabetes, some kind of new diet that’s supposed to be kind of like CPR for your pancreas. Speculative but interesting. You gotta stay well, man. We are counting on your 2 mil fundraiser for Sarah!

Start taking 4000 to 8000 ius of omega 3 per day, will help both the hypertension and cholesterol. If your not in the way south and you don’t have aggressive prostate cancer in the family take similar levels of D3 but if your african be careful, take 1/2 as much and get your levels checked. Have your b12 level checked. Resveritrol 500ius/day and CoQ10 200-400ius/day. CoQ10 is an immune enhancer co careful if you have any autoimmune issues.

Lastly no white foods, sugar, flower, rice bread etc. Sweet potatoes, fafo, quinua are all harder to digest carbs that will help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol.
