I can’t stand the commercials. Geico is so annoying.
My sister took a job once making flyers and putting them on cars with an 800 number to call (for something). Yeah, I know.
The extension supposedly indicated that they were calling due to one of her flyers and she'd get a commisssion. Gee, she didn't make a cent.
Learned a lesson, got a minimum wage job and started up the old-fashioned way.
My pet peeve is Jos. A. Banks: “Buy a shirt and we will give you TWO BUSINESS SUITS, A PAIR OF PANTS AND A BELT FOR FREE. Absolutely free.”
I think you’ve got it backwards.
These companies choose Rush or Hannity or Boortz because they’ve done the research and these guys happen to draw their target market.
It tells you more about the audience than it does about the advertisers.
I tell my kids that if something is advertised on national radio they should probably be more skeptical of it.
I like listening to Rush, but wouldn’t consider buying anything from his advertisers. Any company that can afford the advertising rates there are charging way too much for their product.
Wonder whatever happened to company that kept pitching the steel buildings?
That’s not what’s wrong with talk radio. Well, okay, yes, there are too many commercials. But what’s really wrong with talk radio?
I’m driving home yesterday in 97 degree heat, traffic slow downs, rush hour road construction, idiot drivers and Sean Hannity and some moron cousin of Anthony Weiner shouting over each other trying to get their points across. What I heard was about 30 seconds of loud, obnoxious audio spaghetti before I had enough and put on some music. They both sounded like total buffoons.
I could feel my blood pressure ebb immediately as the music filled my car.
The commercials that repeat the 800-number 14 times in 60 seconds will NEVER get a call from me.
Both Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham have had them as advertisers.
The Ad Council advertises on Rush. Some of those ads jsut don’t add up; especially the ones that demagogue, as if nanny knows what’s best.
As you have noted, many of the “products” advertised are scams and are simply designed to separate the listener from his/her money.
You rarely see such garbage advertised on, say, a baseball broadcast or on a music channel. But they're all over conservative radio. I find that both puzzling and sad
Buyer beware of course, but I do thing the station and the radio personality have some responsibility to their listeners to do at least some checking on their advertisers.
Many times I have heard the host himself telling his listeners how great the product is, when a simple Google search will show how corrupt the product is.
Sure, the customer should do the Google search, but don't the hosts have some moral duty also?
The worst thing about these companies is they are providing a service anyone can pretty much do themselves in seconds for no cost at all. Download free programs like Spybot, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Avast Home, AVG Home, etc, and you can keep your PC clean for no money at all.
My biggest issue with the commercials on popular talk radio shows is there just seems to be so many of them. It honestly feels like each 15 minute segment is eaten up by 8 minutes of commercials or commercial lead-ins. Add in the time spent on news updates and it really feels like these programs are one giant commercial with some commentary thrown in. And I HATE this new twist on commercials where the hosts actually talk about the product as if it were part of the show. It just feels so deceptive.
Anyway, the system is what it is and I know they have to sell advertising space to make money. Just wish they'd maybe charge a higher price for LESS commercials. Perhaps if the shows spent less time on commercials more people would listen - which would justify the higher cost for the fewer advertisers.
Nice Post and good subject!
Too All - If you find yourself *ADDICTED* to conservative yak raydee-oh, (& TeeVee) - Just Turn It OFF!
You can do it!
Go Internet, Go FR!
I love Rush but it hurts me to hear him advertising for that company where you send in your used laptop or cell phone and receive $150.00!
What gets me is that the public service commercials are alway lib oriented. WIC is always on with the little girl saying about WIC benefits, “It doesn’t cost anything...” Easy for her to say but we taxpayers know different.
