in order for it to be 288, it would need to read:
48/(2(9+3))

TI-86:
Operation in parantheses first. Division and multiplication have equal precedence, so these operations are carried out left to right, i.e., 48 divided by 2 times 12.

The TI-85 error is not a loose nut behind the keyboard.

I'm no math expert, but it's my understanding that the equation in the parens is solved first, so
48/2(9+3)=
48/2(12)=
24X12=288

damn...i have that backwards...in order for it to be “2” that is what you would need. 288 is correct.

Answer is 2
when you take out the shortcut notation the equation resolves as (48 / (2 * ( 9 + 3 )))
= (48/(2*12))
=(48/24)
=2
To: grundle
Wow! That’s interesting. One does the division first, and the other does the multiplication first.
Which is more standard? I think because there’s no * between the 2 and the parenthesis, you do the multiplication first.
