I'm no math expert, but it's my understanding that the equation in the parens is solved first, so
48/2(9+3)=
48/2(12)=
24X12=288

I’m no math major, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. The TI-85 has it wrong (which explains why it was replaced by the TI-86).

The operation in the parentheses first. Then the operation between the outcome of the parenthetical operation and its factor, the 2, yielding 24, then the operation between the 24 and the 48, yielding 2. Look at it this way:
48__=
2(9+3)
48__=
2(12)
48__=
24
