Sales of luxe doomsday bunkers up 1,000%

A devastating earthquake strikes Japan. A massive tsunami kills thousands. Fears of a nuclear meltdown run rampant. Bloodshed and violence escalate in Libya.

And U.S. companies selling doomsday bunkers are seeing sales skyrocket anywhere from 20% to 1,000%.

Northwest Shelter Systems, which offers shelters ranging in price from $200,000 to $20 million, has seen sales surge 70% since the uprisings in the Middle East, with the Japanese earthquake only spurring further interest. In hard numbers, that's 12 shelters already booked when the company normally sells four shelters per year.

"Sales have gone through the roof, to the point where we are having trouble keeping up," said Northwest Shelter Systems owner Kevin Thompson.

UndergroundBombShelter.com, which sells portable shelters, bomb shelters and underground bunkers, has seen inquiries soar 400% since the Japanese earthquake. So far sales of its $9,500 nuclear biological chemical shelter tents are at an all-time high -- with four sold in California last week, compared to about one a month normally.

Hardened Structures said inquiries have shot up about 20% since the earthquake -- particularly for its apocalyptic 2012 shelters, radiation-protection tents, and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) air filters.

Vivos, a company that sells rooms in 200-person doomsday bunkers, has received thousands of applications since the massive earthquake in Japan, with reservations spiking nearly 1,000% last week. And people are backing their fear with cash: A reservation requires a minimum deposit of $5,000.

"People are afraid of the earth-changing events and ripple effects of the earthquake, which led to tsunamis, the nuclear meltdown, and which will lead to radiation and health concerns," said Vivos CEO Robert Vicino. "Where it ends, I don't know. Does it lead to economic collapse? A true economic collapse would lead to anarchy, which could lead to 90% of the population being killed off."

After the devaluation of the dollar and the accounting change in the price of PMs: 100 oz of silver is going to be worth about 150,000 dollars in today’s money - or 3/4 of a million in tomorrow’s money.

So one plan would be to use some of that silver and/or gold to buy a bomb shelter. Just choose the features you want to suit your budget.

If your place gets hit by a tsunami, the rest of us are hosed.

Underground shelters are useful for several types of disasters:

1. Some nitwit in Libya, Egypt, or catboxistan breaks into a germ warfare lab and releases The New Improved Smallpox Virus.

2. Asteroid/comet bombardment. It has happened before; it will happen again. Mass extinction events are cyclical and we are due right about now. Heard a rumor that this is the real reason that food prices are going higher with record harvests. What do they know that we don’t?

3. Nuke terrorist attack. Right now looks like an optimal time. What would Zerobama do? Who would he apologize to?

4. Russkie or Chicom BOOB attack (Bolt Out Of the Blue). Once again, they see a chance to dominate the world.

5. Yellowstone blows. It’s overdue as well.

My plan is to stock supplies, cooperate with friends/neighbors/relatives, and stay mobile as well as organized. Determine the threat and act fast.

In Tibet, there are ancient tales about 'mountain topping' tsunamis. At least one anthropologist says that the Tibetans moved there to escape tsunamis. So....

I swear!

It does seen like every disaster is due or overdue these days.

These are times that 'get on your nerves.'

Troubling times.

That would bed a species-ending event.

“I set my bow in the clouds...”

How many humans were extant, at the end of the last ice age?

Perhaps we have been there before.

"Perhaps we have been there before.

For sure.

This is the last near extinction event for humans:

Late Pleostocene Human Population Bottlenecks. . . (Toba)

Our DNA indicates that only about 10,000 humans worldwide survived this event.

Fascinating thread. Just got off the phone with my wife - “Honey, dress the truck - We are loking at snow in DC on Saturday”.

Not that I expect her to put on the plow and spreader before I get home - but I want her car out of the way.

Lieder, I can’t get my other truck back from my kid in Norfolk in time to help.

I night need it. Oh well, I started this business with one truck...

How did you broach the subject to your neighbors?

My neighborhood was easy. I got them to read the book "One Second After". About a month later, I called for our first meeting. About 20 like-minded neighbors showed up and we started from there.

Questions like ‘what would you do if credit cards suddenly stopped working?’.

It helps that my neighbors think a lot like me.

Patience and gentle prodding.

It's not easy, but it can be done. Good luck.
