I heard the filmmaker interviewed. He’s a leftwing guy and he set out to make a leftwing movie but the facts didnt support it and his movie (to his surprise) is more conservative in its positions.

"Why it happened: Guggenheim’s big backers may have actually irked independent-minded Academy members. Worse, his teacher’s union-bashing film was embraced by conservatives, one of whom said his Oscar snub is “the price a political apostate pays in Hollywood for straying off the liberal plantation.” Education expert Diane Ravitch trashed it as inaccurate. A more dispassionate expert says, “The first response to the movie was that it’s about poor black kids, and it’s from the Gore guy, so it must be liberal and good-hearted. And then Ravitch and others portrayed it as basically right-wing propaganda, which unsettled the liberal members of the Academy.

I don’t think the movie is as reactionary as Ravitch portrayed it, but I also don’t think it’s very good.” An Oscar doc voter agrees. “It was a great deal of hype. I felt like I’d seen the story before.” “It also tanked at the box office, relative to what was spent on promoting it,” adds the education expert. “The true unforgivable sin in Hollywood!”

I haven't seen this movie. I don't think it came to my area.

I saw it in a theater. I never thought I would pay to see a documentary. I cried with the families at the end.

I havd not yet seen "Waiting for Superman".

Another really good documentary is "Mugabe and the White African". It shows what and uncontrolled Marxist dictator is really like. It is interesting that the dictator's thugs used a lot of "share the wealth" rhetoric (where have I heard that before?) as they confiscated private property based on race by threats of and actual violence.

I’ll have to check it out. Now I have the Flaming Lips song by the same title in my head.

80% + of all education budget dollars in the state of California goes to employees and employees benefits.

It has only about 20% to do with the kids on a yearly basis.. even less when considering maintenance and operations of facilities.

Excellent movie. Exposes the nonsense going on in the Department of Education. Tears the unions to shreds for sheltering terrible teachers, gets to the heart of where the money is being wasted.

My local TP had a trip to the movies to see this. Will infuriate and sadden you at the same time!

Definitely not left wing.

I have a lib friend who hates it. Must be great. Haven't seen it myself, but I would recommend “The Lottery”, a documentary (available at Netflix) about the New York City school system and how they have a few slots in charter schools available each year. Interesting view of the school district.

From the "Director" of An Inconvenient Truth?

How does one "direct" a slide show narrated by a piece of wood?

I heard it’s good, but this director’s word is tainted. There were all kinds of lies in “Inconvenient Truth.” Even though the message here is more along what I agree with, that doesn’t make it accurate.

It has a very left-wing presentation but it’s very anti-union in the actual content.

It’s definitely worth checking out.

I just saw it. The thing that kind of surprised me was that I had a strong emotional response when that girl at the end won the lotto. It was almost like watching a lotto to see who doesn’t have to be poor the rest of their life.

My major disappointment with the movie was that it did not touch on home schooling and it’s product.

I’ve gone on record for well over five years that public schools should be abolished. It is a 19th century paradigm that, in this world of google, the internet, etc., has outlived its usefulness. And there is a growing awareness in the US that a college education may not be the panacea everyone makes it out to be. Kinda like owning your own home.

And I think the teachers unions should be abolished. Contracts should expire and cash strapped districts should pull an “air traffic controller” on them. It’s not as if the closure would really hurt any of the students. ;)

I just saw it. I felt bad for the kids, but it seemed like I had seen it before. Ignored “urban” culture, which I blame for much of what ails the schools.

The film is making its way to tv. I just watched it on pay per view. It is no threat to conservatives but the liberals are outraged. They hate it more than they hated George Bush! I live in New Orleans and feel its principles could work miracles.

Let’s get out of the prison business and into the smart education business. Please watch the film if you get the opportunity.
