IRON BOWL DAY!
I grew up in Auburn. I was moved there in the fall of 1962 when my dad became a professor in the School of Engineering. We lived across from Magnolia Dormitory, right in between the Day Boarding House and Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Nixon's home. Bodie Hinton was the director of the Auburn Marching Band. Ralph Brown Draughon was the President. Jimmy Sidle was the quarterback of the team. Ralph "Shug" Jordan was the football coach. I was 7. I joined the family.
It is family. Most Auburn supporters have attended Auburn University, or their family members did, or they have worked for Auburn University. They are connected to it in some fashion. It is family.
There are tales told at family reunions. There are tales told a parties, weddings and funerals. There are tales told in a parking lot on a crisp Saturday morning, enjoying a feast which puts the White House Caterers to shame. Elegance and fun! Everyone is invited. We're family!
Today is the Day. The 2010 Iron Bowl played in Tuscaloosa. Not Birmingham. Not Birmingham anymore. We're now rotating back and forth from Jordan-Hare to Bryant-Denny. As it should have been all along.
Just to get us in the mood (as if we need encouragement!) here are some videos: Click the links!

I chose this one because my daughter is in the Tenor Sax section. It was her last year. She has now joined her mom, her dad, her aunt, and uncle and has now been joined by her two cousins. It is a family thing.
The Greatest Iron Bowl
I was there, just a freshman at Auburn and in the band. Frankly, we were getting beat up all up and down the field. It was a miserable, dismal. We were looking at another year of taunts and teasing from the other teams supporters whenever we went to K Mart or a tractor pull. The score at the end of three quarters was 16 0. Finally, with just 10 minutes left, we scored a field goal. At least we werent going home empty handed.
But, with 5:31 left it all changed. We held Bama to their own side of the field. Greg Gantt was poised to punt it safely away. But our Bill Newton blocked the ball back into Gantts face. David Lagner picked it up and sprinted into our endzone for the score. The PAT was good and the score was 16 -10. Not a win yet. We rejoiced for the score, but we were all expecting to lose anyway. Their next possession didnt go so hot
for them. Again, Gantt had to punt it away. AGAIN, the punt was blocked and AGAIN, David Lagner picked it up and went in to the end zone for the score. The PAT was good. There was no time left on the clock. Game over. 17 16. We must never forget the words of their coach when he said, prior to the game,

THE AUBURN CREED |
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God." And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. |

I must say, it’s hard to imagine a team with as soft of a defense as Auburn playing for a national championship, you can only outscore your opponents so much.
The good news is there still is plenty of time.
Last year during this game, I was visiting my 86-year-old mother in a nursing home in Daphne, AL. As I rolled her through the halls, the tv’s in every room were set to the Iron Bowl and the sound echoed through the hallways.
My sister and I took Mama out for some air and the game was on radio even out in the courtyard.
It was one of the last times I was with her as she had a stroke and passed away a week later. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch the Iron Bowl without thinking of her now.
I wasn’t raised in Alabama and I didn’t attend either school so I don’t really have a dog in the hunt other than I like to watch good football. Sure seems like Alabama has the early advantage but there should be a lot more scoring.
Late, but here.
This is getting ugly very quickly.
The bad news is that if Bama wins, there goes the streak of SEC National champions.
We did not play very well at all that last possession. C’mon Auburn, ya’ gotta get it together.
The AU announcers must be reading the thread. They quoted you. LOL!
great thread Ma’am!
I see. I’m not giving up.
Thank you. I hope the game gets better soon. We’ve come from behind before.
AU defense needs to come up big here. Didn’t realize they were ranked 100/120 in pass defense....OUCH!
And if Fairley isn’t 100%, that only makes it tougher.
Nick Fairly sacked him! Ha!
No comment on the flag.
What a BS call!!!!!!
Still, don’t celebrate when you’re 14 down.
oh for crying out loud
Ok, Auburn’s got ‘em right where they want them.....21-0.
No comment. It was obvious.
I think the ref just made us mad. I hope so.
What kind of red meat has Nick been feeding them boys?
Dang!
That’s crap. Auburn finally makes a big play, and they call THAT?!?!?!
Might not matter in the end, but still, if Auburn gets the ball and scores, it’s 14-7.
