Divers find prehistoric artifacts in North Port spring [ 10K yrs BP ]
Tampa Bay Online ^ | August 19, 2010 | Keith Morelli, Tampa Tribune

In the pitch-black depths of an isolated North Port spring sits a silt-covered ledge that is revealing secrets about a prehistoric nomadic people, secrets held in murky silence for 100 centuries... This stuff could be as old as 13,000 years old, when wandering tribes traversed Florida. Their travels included stopovers at what is now known as Little Salt Spring, 90 minutes south of Tampa. Artifacts are delicately uncovered from a ledge 90 feet below the surface... John Gifford, an underwater archaeologist with UM's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science along with aquarium divers are working together to gather the artifacts. "In the last ice age, between about 10,000 and 13,000 years ago, the water level was 90 feet lower then than it is today," Gifford said. "It's generally thought that along that early beach area, those early humans left their tools or whatever artifacts they found at that site... Little Salt Spring," Gifford said, "is where we have at least a fighting chance at finding some traces of human activity say 9,000 or 10,000 years ago." ...The sinkhole's water chemistry and temperature have helped to create a one-of-a-kind, prehistoric submerged site where late Paleo-Indian and Archaic artifacts are unusually well preserved... In 2005, Gifford and his graduate students discovered two exceptional Archaic artifacts -- a greenstone pendant and a carved stone that appears to be part of a spear thrower -- estimated to be approximately 7,000 years old.

“Paleo-Indian”

This is insulting. I have been saying for years that I could not understand why archaeologists haven’t paid more attention to the US. As if nothing could possibly have existed here to perk their “intellectual” interest.
Freaking snobs.

“In the last ice age, between about 10,000 and 13,000 years ago, the water level was 90 feet lower then than it is today,”

Wrong.

The sea level 15,000 years ago was 400-300 feet lower than today. The Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Florida coastlines would be radically different than today’s coastlines.

About 13,500 years ago a location where Lake Superior exists today was hit by a bolide causing the ice sheet to melt catastrophically. A huge flood of fresh water flowed northerly from today’s Hudson Bay, and also down the present St. Lawrence seaway, resulting in a resurgence of cold temperatures and expanding ice sheets. The sea levels once again dropped.

In another part of the world, it wasn’t until 8000 years ago that the Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf began to be flooded by the sea.

The article gives me a headache! Has this “spring/sinkhole” always, or nearly always had water in it? The early paleo carbon units left this stuff on a ledge 100’ down a hole in the ground? With or without water in it, that seems a stretch. Is it safe to assume it’s a fresh water spring — or not? Need Tylenol!

The article said it used to be a beach- "In the last ice age, between about 10,000 and 13,000 years ago, the water level was 90 feet lower then than it is today," Gifford said. "It's generally thought that along that early beach area, those early humans left their tools or whatever artifacts they found at that site."

The period between ~12,000 and ~10,000 years BS(Before SUV's) might have had erratic sea levels and wandering beaches. But generally, at the end of the last ice age the "beach" would have been ~200 miles to the east. And FWIW, most "experts" believe the last high stand ~125,000 years BS, virtually ALL of Florida would have been under water. I think these guys are fishing; no pun intended. So, I STILL need Tylenol.

OOPS!!! Brain flatulence! The Gulf(western) coast of Florida would have been ~200 miles to the WEST of its present location around the end of the last ice age. DUH!
