Life Survived Catastrophic Space Rock Impact [Chesapeake Bay area]
Space.com ^ | June 26, 2008 | Jeanna Bryner

Posted on 06/26/2008 8:04:37 PM PDT by ETL

The true impact of an asteroid or comet crashing near the Chesapeake Bay 35 million years ago has been examined in detail for the first time. The analysis reveals the resilience of life in the aftermath of disaster.

The impact crater, which is buried under 400 to 1,200 feet (120 to 365 meters) of sand, silt and clay, spans twice the length of Manhattan. The sprawling depression helped create what would eventually become Chesapeake Bay. About 10,000 years ago, ice sheets began to melt and once-dry river valleys filled with water. The rivers of the Chesapeake region converged directly over the buried crater, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Well heck, its a good thing we didn't have any SUV’s back then, cuz that really would have threatened life on the planet.

There's another ancient buried impact crater beneath the Catskill Mountains of New York. That one occurred around 380 million years ago, near what's now Woodland Valley. The Esopus Creek runs along half of the rim. (that's a Route-28 sign at the upper left of the image). This thing can actually be seen rather easily on some New York State highway maps. It's about 6 miles wide and 19 in circumference. It's just to the northwest of Asokan Reservoir. However, as the articles state, it's deeply buried beneath the horizontal sedimentary rock beds of the Catskills. The only reason the circular feature is visible on the surface is because of weakness in the rock overlaying the actual crater's rim.

That’s why we don’t flinch at the comet disaster warnings.

What are the odds another one will hit ~here~, again?

As some character played by Harrison Ford once hollered, “don’t give me the odds”.
