STOCKHOLM Divers who found what's believed to be the world's oldest drinkable champagne say they have also discovered two-centuries-old bottles of beer at a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea.
Bjorn Haggblom, a spokesman for the researchers, says they found a handful of beer bottles this week while salvaging champagne discovered near the Aland Islands in July.
He said researchers who tried drops of the dark, foamy liquid liked the taste of it.

Do the bottles have a refundable deposit? ;-)
“Two cans of Milwaukee's Best and some 200 year beers.”
“I'll take the old stuff.”
In those waters the beer would have been refrigerated.
I’m sure I would try a bottle...after I prime the pump with 4-5 of my regular (modern) beers.
Back in college, my grandmother (alive, well and 106) gave me a six-pack of Ballentine. At the time, I was poor and really glad to have it. When I got around to polishing it off with my buddies, we discovered it had pull tabs. The beer was like 9-10 years old! Just saying...
Beer Ping!!!!
B^)
Not to mention, to skunk beer you need sunlight (or at least variation in temp., as you observe).
I dunno about that, sticking a 6 pack into a fast running spring run cools it down a treat, so being at the bottom of the baltic probably kept it nice and cold.
Hey, if the beer is canned, I bet it has the old pop-tops. I hope they're careful opening it, and properly dispose of the plastic six-pack plastic ring thingy. Wouldn't want to endanger waterfowl, ya know.
Perhaps they stored it in boxes with plastic bags inside like redneck wine. :-)

Well, if it isn't Moët et Chandon Brut Impérial, as far as i'm concerned they can leave it in the sea.
Okay I like French Champagne. (anything else 'isn't')
I'd also kill for Escargot in garlic/butter sauce. (figuratively speaking of course)
The two together are .. heaven. So sue me.

Thanks markomalley. Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution. |
