Professor booted from Starbucks

NEW YORK, - A New York English professor said she was kicked out of a Starbucks by three police officers because she refused to follow the cafe's ordering rules.

Lynne Rosenthal, who gave her age as early 60s, said she got into an argument with a barista Sunday morning because she refused to specify whether she wanted butter or cheese on her multigrain bagel, the New York Post reported Monday.

"I just wanted a multigrain bagel," Rosenthal said. "I refused to say 'without butter or cheese.' When you go to Burger King, you don't have to list the six things you don't want."

"Linguistically, it's stupid, and I'm a stickler for correct English," she said.

Rosenthal said a manager called police during the incident and three officers who responded to the scene ordered her to leave the store.

"It was very humiliating to be thrown out, and all I did was ask for a bagel," Rosenthal said. "If you don't use their language, they refuse to serve you. They don't understand what a plain multigrain bagel is."

A Starbucks employee at the store during the incident said Rosenthal was being unreasonable.

I refuse to say “Venti” anything. I ask for a large coffee and no room for cream.

Best coffee I've had is from a pancake restaurant. But this ain't no IHOP, a specialy built building, looking like a french country home, with nice landscaping and decore.

They serve a Kona blend coffee (with REAL, heavy cream) Strong but not bitter. I'd describe it as a full bodied coffee. No burnt taste.

Yeah, you’re right. My thing is that unlike most people, I’m not a conoisseur of coffee. Coffee is coffee to me.

I guess I’m like my father. He would probably be appalled at the expensive coffees being served nowadays. Dad used 8 O’Clock Coffee which years ago was sold by the old A&P Supermarkets (I think you can get it at a few other stores now). He would use and reuse the same pot over and over again without washing it out (much to my mother’s chagrin). He claimed that any residue actually made the coffee better.

I don’t know about that, but I can’t be bothered spending big bucks on a beverage that, as you said, costs so little to produce. And those bagels and what not — you can buy those anywhere for a lot less money. There is nothing at Starbucks that makes their products worth the expense.

We definitely agree on Kona. It is simply the best coffee there is. Now I prefer pure Kona, because most of the time when you get a “Kona blend” it is 10% Kona and 90% cheapest coffee they can find.

Libs often wear scarfs in the summertime for no apparent reason. Please fill me in as to why, if anyone knows.

Hide their evil Marxist agenda? I have no idea.

Because some people don’t use butter? It seems like the server was a horse’s rear end about it. The mgr didn’t help either. You just tell the kid to give the lady a bagle and be done with it. This is funny when libs knock heads.

Why didn’t she just take the free butter and put it in her purse for later?

Actually the reason she didn't want butter on the bagel is that butter won't melt in her mouth so she can't eat it at all. So some in her purse for later would be of no use to her.

Can’t have “unreasonable” customers.

Out of curiosity, do you really need to specify that the other half of your “half decaf” is “regular?”

...I do, because I also specify the “bold” flavor which I didn’t say in my post. Wouldn’t want both “bold” and some other caffeinated flavor in there.

Wow. That does look good. Let me know where that is and if I’m ever in the area I’ll meet you there and buy your breakfast.

I'd think the badge would tend to irritate the scrotum and inner thighs.

"We have mocha though.". *slap*

Actually, mocha is one of the oldest coffees and comes from Yemen. It's not chocolate.

Lake Zurich, Illinois

About an hour NW of downtown Chicago.

They've got great potato pancakes and swedish pancakes. Supposed to have a good apple pancake. I like their Belgian Waffle. I have them make it with chocolate chips in it, then sprinkle more on top, add a bowl of strawberrys and bananas on top, and top it off with fresh whipped cream...YUMMMMM!

Actually, mocha is one of the oldest coffees and comes from Yemen. It's not chocolate.

Addendum: It came from Al-Makha, Yemen. Since it naturally has chocolate tones, people in Europe in the 17th century when coffee houses were becoming popular heard "Al Makha" and called it mocha.

"I just wanted a multigrain bagel," Rosenthal said. "I refused to say 'without butter or cheese.' When you go to Burger King, you don't have to list the six things you don't want."

The only way I can make sense out of this is if the prof started complaining when the bagel came back with butter and cheese. Prof then likely threw a hissy fit and demanded it plain. Befuddled barista said "but you didn't tell me not to butter it up and schmere it ..." Prof then went all Henry Gates on her and started to lecture about the proper use of the English language. Maybe Obama can hold a coffee summit and bring peace to the nation.

Are the baristas at Starbucks really spreading stuff on your bagel for you?

I’m assuming they are handing out little plastic tubs.

Hence my original comment: take the free butter, put it in your purse, and get on with your life.

Actually, she didn’t order a plain bagel. She ordered a multigrain bagel, and the waiter/waitress asked if she wanted butter or cheese, or neither.

That’s when she yelled:

“I want my multigrain bagel!” Rosenthal said.

She admits that this wasn’t the first time she has done something like this, and a witness claimed she called the server an a—hole.

She wasn’t defending proper English, and she wasn’t standing up for her rights. She was being an immature piece of work.
