NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A decade after the raising of the Confederate submarine Hunley off the South Carolina coast, the cause of the sinking of the first sub in history to sink an enemy warship remains a mystery. But scientists are edging closer.
On Friday, scientists announced one of the final steps that should help explain what happened after the hand-cranked sub and its eight-man crew rammed a spar with a powder charge into the Union blockade ship Housatonic off Charleston in February, 1864.....

The drawing you posted is probably based on engineer Alexander's article, written over 30 years after the sinking. It leaves out a number of details. The Hunley was even more advanced than thought.
Those had to be some extraordinarily brave men to go down under water in that little sub, IMHO.
Oh, and all three sinkings were almost certainly Bush’s fault.

Not all directly. One was due to global climate change.
Intelligent Whale, an experimental hand-cranked submarine, was built on the design of Scovel S. Meriam in 1863 by Augustus Price and Cornelius S. Bushnell. In 1864 the American Submarine Co., was formed, taking over the interests of Bushnell and Price and there followed years of litigation over the ownership of the craft. When title was established by a court the submarine was sold 29 October 1869 to the Navy Department, with most of the price to be paid after successful trials. Intelligent Whale submerged by filling water compartments, and expelled the water by pumps and compressed air. It was estimated that it could stay submerged for about 10 hours.
Don’t worry, when they get a little older the school system will dumb them down.
I wonder if Price/Brushnell and the makers of The Hunley would have sued each other. Looks suspiciously like some copying was going on.
Ping!
And don’t forget those evil SUV’s.

That’s where Obama is taking us. A hand cranked Suburban SUV. Or we’ll all be like Fred Flintstone..
10 hours?
Pikers!
The Hunley stayed submerged for over a century!
