The memorials in Washington are truly amazing.
The Vietnam Memorial is phenominal during the day; but marginal (at best) in the evening/night. During the day, the reflected heat, the apparent depth that the names appear in the polished stone - all work together to envoke a sorrowful emotional event.
Conversely, the Korean memorial is lackluster during the day; but is downright scary at night. At night, the soldiers appear almost alive, like ghosts in a rice paddy, moving in a loose formation that almost makes you expect an explosion to erupt at any moment. The holographic images on the walls add to this surreal memorial.
So, if you go to DC to visit; see the Vietnam Memorial at noon - then go do something else; and after the sun goes down, go see the Korean Memorial. That way, you will see each of these masterpieces in their prime.

Wish they'd do something like this for Antietam or Gettysburg.

I agree. When I visited the Korean War memorial after dark it definitely evoked an emotion of sorrow for the lost soldiers of that war. It was as if those ghostly warriors were still on patrol, carrying out their duty.

KK. This got me to log on rather that lurk. The sculpture is by a great artist, one of my favorites, and I don't think the article even mentions him. Frederick Hart. He did this at the National Cathedral.

Actually, any Conservative is free to use it. Progressives, liberals, communists, socialists, abortionists and the rest of that crew can go pound sand.

That statue is what? 25 years old, maybe 30?
Needing restoration of the type described after that short a time period (even in DC weather) is indicative of serious neglect, imho.
And I agree, the best time to see both the Vietnam and Korean War Memorials is at night. I used to have a GREAT poster of a picture taken at The Wall (can’t remember the photographer) during an Independence Day fireworks display. Shot down the length of The Wall from the Western end, the Washington Monument with the fireworks exploding around it were reflected on The Wall’s Eastern face.

Been there, seen that.
It’s not statues.
I want statues.
[and all traces of the Confederacy “un-erased”...to see the plaques and empty spaces where they used to be, you’d think the Yankees just showed up and committed suicide]
