The memorials in Washington are truly amazing.

The Vietnam Memorial is phenominal during the day; but marginal (at best) in the evening/night. During the day, the reflected heat, the apparent depth that the names appear in the polished stone - all work together to envoke a sorrowful emotional event.

Conversely, the Korean memorial is lackluster during the day; but is downright scary at night. At night, the soldiers appear almost alive, like ghosts in a rice paddy, moving in a loose formation that almost makes you expect an explosion to erupt at any moment. The holographic images on the walls add to this surreal memorial.

So, if you go to DC to visit; see the Vietnam Memorial at noon - then go do something else; and after the sun goes down, go see the Korean Memorial. That way, you will see each of these masterpieces in their prime.

I agree. When I visited the Korean War memorial after dark it definitely evoked an emotion of sorrow for the lost soldiers of that war. It was as if those ghostly warriors were still on patrol, carrying out their duty.
