Two distinct groups from Asia settled in the New World and not one single migration as suggested by previous genetic studies, experts said Monday after comparing the skulls of early Americans.
Paleoanthropologists from Brazil, Chile and Germany compared the skulls of several dozen Paleoamericans, dating back to the early days of migration 11,000 years ago, with the more recent remains of more than 300 Amerindians.
"We found that the differences between Early and Late Native American groups match the predictions of a two-migration scenario far better than they do those of any other hypothesis," they said.
"In other words, these differences are so large that it is highly improbable that the earliest inhabitants of the New World were the direct ancestors of recent Native American populations."
Their landmark research found differences in the cranial morphology that could only be explained by the fact that the last common ancestor of the Early and Late Native American groups came from outside the continent.
The experts agreed the differences were best explained by a scenario in which a first wave of settlers came across the Bering Strait from Northeast Asia followed by a second group from East Asia much later via the same route.
"We conclude that the morphological diversity documented through time in the New World is best accounted for by a model postulating two waves of human expansion into the continent originating in East Asia and entering through Beringia," they said.
"This disparity between our results and those of most genetic studies points to a large gap in our understanding of the peopling of the New World."

Meanwhile in the NON fiction anthropological section this is scientifically interesting...
Both are apparently American
maybe they never mixed, but the first group died out in N America?
Here's an example, good for one way travel:
“3 times.
I count us because it was no different than any of the other times.”
Well, I’m not entirely on the same page with you. Having both an Indian and Anglo side to my acestry, I’ll submit that my Anglo ancestors did a lot better job of it.
Western civilization, and Christian religion have it all over aboriginal lifestyles, and animist religions. Just my opinion, but I would have been dead within a year if I’d been born into the Cherokee tribe 300 years back.
Not terribly interested in starting a casino, but I never viewed such an operation as an icon of a society. ;-)
At least the europeans settled here by choice.
I love the Bard, a quote for everything.

The Lovelock skulls are available for anyone to see. They are housed at the Humboldt Museum in Winnemucca Nevada. 175 W Jungo Rd, Winnemucca, Nevada, 89445, United States.
You'll find a small, barely marked collection of the artifacts (arrowheads, etc.) on the second floor, in the display case by the window.
The skulls themselves are kept in a back room, where the curator stores them out of view so as "not to offend the Indians." I've been told that if you ask her about them she'll lead you downstairs to her office, where she keeps them unceremoniously lined up in a cabinet.
I was crossing Nevada last month with the hopes of seeing them myself, on our way to California, but the Museum closed at 4:30 that day. The curator offered to stay until we got there, but we were still 2 hours out. She was very nice. She confirmed over the phone about the skulls.
There are many accounts of red haired giants or mummies being found, all over the world. How much can believed is another story.
Over thousands of years a resident population can go from long to broad skulls ~ and then back again.
Back when physical shapes were all you had to go on, it was cutting edge science; although a bit arbitrary as to the weighting of different morphological factors, at least it was somewhat useful.
Now there is DNA. DNA is not arbitrary, and the findings can be pretty conclusive.
This is one of the last gasps of the great morphologists!
The Neanderthals apparantly had only the yellow-red pigment. They lived in various places in Eur-Asia. They didn't live in Africa, but they made it to New Guinea.
Now, about exceptionally large individuals, both the Iriquoian and Mohican warrior elites were about 7 feet tall.
This happened by means of selective "adoptions". It was very difficult for warrior elites to maintain themselves through normal reproduction back in the good old days so they simply went out and captured children who looked promising and brought them up in their warrior societies.
The Iriquoian 6 nations preyed on the far more numerous non-confederation Mingo Indians found in the Ohio and Kanawah Valleys. The Mohican did something similar throughout New England.
The ancient Spartans had the same dilemma ~ so it was common to more or less "borrow a womb" or 2, or 3, or a bunch to create more descendants than would otherwise be normal ~ and thereby have more promising newcomers to join the elite at a later time.
Remember, the Spartans were prone to murder any blemished newborns, and that sort of thing definitely hurt their rate of reproduction. The Leftwingtards are dying out for the same reason.

I've seen pictures recently, here on FR IIRC, linked from one of the archaeological sites. Giants only if you consider 6’ giant. Having a grandfather whose nickname was “Red” I'm inclined to believe such things are possible.
