WASHINGTON Nearly half the people who need potentially lifesaving checks for the nations second-highest cause of cancer deaths - colorectal cancer - miss them, despite years of public efforts to make colon screening as widespread as tests for breast and prostate cancer. The dreaded colonoscopy may get the most attention but a cheap, at-home stool test works, too - and when California health care provider Kaiser Permanente started mailing those test kits to patients due for a colon check, its screening rates jumped well above the national average.

What makes you think Americans are ugly? You’ve acted like an obnoxious pig from the moment you came onto this thread. Keep your anti-American sentiments to yourself.
“I know from up-close observation that colon cancer is not a nice way to die.”

I am sorry for your loss. I lost my Aunt last year, due to a perforation of her bowel during a colonoscopy. It was not a nice way to die, either. She went septic.
It’s disgusting that some people think anyone with less than perfect health should be kicked around. They always sing a different tune when their own health begins to fail.
Nothing is risk free. You just have to weigh them and decide.
Yeah, isn’t it a shame that not everyone is as perfect as they are?
If you don’t like it, why are you living here?
There are plenty of other countries on this planet which share you sentiment. You could be happy there hypocritically commiserating about what jerks Americans are.
I'm truly sorry for your loss.
The prep is the bitch and not the procedure.
Dave Berry, a humor columnist, wrote an in depth article about his colonoscopy. He said some people mix the prep with vodka; however, this may result in the patient running to the bathroom in a drunken state spraying uncontrollably. After wards, the patient would have no choice but to burn their home down to the foundation.
May all your colonoscopy appointments be early in the day.
I ran across that thread. There’s a link to it in post 72.
Best laugh I’ve had in a long time. Probably because I could identify with it.
Except that my colonoscopy wasn’t so pleasant cause I wasn’t out completely for it.
Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!
Do you know your specific clean out regimen yet?
Yeah. Trying miralax and Pedialyte and lots of chicken broth.
And not really interesting in a test run. I’ll just take my chances cause if I’m going to react, I’ll react whether I do it now or then and I don’t see that any other method is any better option.
They should give them out during Opening Day this spring and maybe at the Super Bowl.
You think so? Here is another one. You're really an a$$hole.
No, I wasn’t getting a screening. I had a problem otherwise I never would have had it done. And I had just had back surgery so my deductible had already been met.
My insurance will not cover PET Scans, CT scans, MRI’s and certain xrays and scans. Only basic xrays for example a chest xray. And yes, I have had an illness or a disease at the time. It goes under the deductible and we have a $5000 deductible. I had to pay for a bone scan out of pocket too. I had already been diagnosed so that wasn’t a screening either. I’m still making payments on that.
I’m certainly not “bent out of shape”. I was just stating a possible reason why people were not running to get these done. Between the nasty prep the night before and the cost for those whose insurance doesn’t cover I think that may be a possible reason why there are such a low number of people getting these. I feel very blessed to have any health insurance at all and realize that insurance companies have to draw the line somewhere.
My husband works for a small company and they need to keep insurance costs down. I understand that completely. I’m not complaining.
Costs vary depending on where you live and what hospital or clinic you have these done at. I obtained the cost estimates through my insurance company website.
One thing people can do is have them done when they have already reached their deductible for the year for something else.
There are different brands and types of preps that they can use. I have IBS and was worried too. I asked my regular doctor to contact the gastroenterologist and ask that he prescribe the gentlest prep. I used GoLytely and it wasn’t bad at all. I did start taking the pills earlier in the day than they recommended and that turned out to be a good idea.
Make sure it is the GOLytely. They make other “Lytely” that are not as mild. Did it taste awful? Yep, it wasn’t the best tasting stuff. Make sure you use the coldest water you can. I refrigerated the jug of water before using it. You can’t flavor it with any type of Cyrstal Light. Just the lemon I think. Nothing with red or pink coloring.
I did wake up before the procedure was finished and it wasn’t pleasant. If I ever had another one I’d make sure the doctor and I discussed that possibility beforehand.
I’m a diabetic so skipping meals is really not so easily done. Diabetics usually get the first appointments in the morning for this reason. You don’t have any idea how much insulin to take. If you take too much and your blood sugar gets too low you will have to eat or drink something sugary and cancel the test and do it all over again. EEK! That just adds to all of the angst IMO.
I did have to do this once before years ago for a kidney xray and I passed out I got so sick from what I had to drink. I’ve known a few people who have fainted during the prep procedure. One ended up hitting her head on the sink and had a concussion.
I wonder sometimes why they give a 200 lb man the same amount of prep as a little 90 lb. old lady. (not me)
Just saying that for people who have IBS or other problems already, diabetic etc. it isn’t always a piece of cake.
I have a friend who has gone through rectal cancer and these preps are hell for her.
Try to talk to your doctor about your worries and see what they can do for you to make it a bit easier like a milder prep solution.
And one more: You really have no idea what I’m talking about, do you?
On the contrary...
Everyone gets it but you.
Why don’t you go play in traffic somewhere?
