What Are You Reading Now? (My Quarterly Survey)
1/12/10

Posted on 01/12/2010 7:17:29 PM PST by MplsSteve

OK, it's time for my quarterly What Are You Reading Now? survey.

I do this because I like to gauge what Freepers are reading. I believe that the Freeper community are one of the more well-read on the Internet.

What are you reading? It can be anything...a classic novel, a NY Times bestseller, a technical journal, a trashy pulp novel - in short, anything.

Please do not defile this thread by replying "I'm Reading This Thread". It became unfunny a long time ago.

I'll start. I'm reading "Pickett's Charge: A Microstudy" by George R Stewart. It was written in 1959 and is a classic read about the last day of the battle of Gettysburg. It was his only book about the Civil War but he wrote many others.

Well, what are you reading?

It’s one of those books I don’t want to finish...feel like a fly-on-the-wall in the lives of the characters...and can identify with the time period.

Why were you disappointed? I have to lead a group discussion on it next week and would love to have more opinions and insights. Did you have expectations of it because of the award or reviews?

like them both, esp TGD. Space trilogy is also excellent. Though I reread MC often as it has excellent moral arguments that i find useful to reference.

Do you happen to remember who recorded it? There’s a famous guy who did a lot of recordings of the Aubrey Maturin series and I’m told he did fantastic accents and good dramatic flair. What did you think?

It was read by John Lee, published in 2003. (I looked on the library catalog.) There’s an earlier recording (1991) by Patrick Tull.

I liked the reader on the discs I had ... pleasant voice, and the characters were reasonably distinct. However, I didn’t notice accents, especially, nor great dramatic flair. It could be the 1991 set that you were told about.

Yes it was Tull and no, he’s not Jethro’s brother. Seriously, I’ve heard he was the definitive voice for the O’Brian series.

Thanks for your insights.

Happy to help! I’ll watch for recordings by Tull when I check the recorded-book shelves.

Someone should fill Howard Zinn with wax and put him on display like Lenin.
