Vanity, oh Vanity...Movies with 1911 .45's prominent...

Started another thread about getting sights for my 1911. And it got me thinking that another thread might be worthwhile...

What are some films that use the 1911 prominently? Terrific (or sucky!) movies that have the ole standby as the handgun of choice?

Tell me, tell me, tell me...

Personally, I’m excited that the new James Ellroy is supposed to come out this fall. Of course, I’ve been hearing that for like the last three years.

I remember Jimmy cagney had pockets full of them in one of his gangster movies - empties them all and throws one at the end.

Phantasm.
Used a .45 against the dwarves.

Looks like a Taurus 9mm in the Beretta 92 configuration.

I might have to watch that movie again and freeze the frame on a good picture of the gun to see what it actually is. Supposed to be a .45. Hollywood is really bad about getting guns wrong though.

Just saw that on DVD, never remember even hearing about it when it was in theaters.

Well it was pretty much panned esp. by Ebert ... don’t care, I love that movie though not too much into guy movies ... but then I did go and see Inglorius Bastards ...the SS colonel was great and made the movie ....

I believe Tom Hanks used one in Road to Perdition, a great movie, BTW, about hit man Mike Sullivan.

Speaking of Tom Hanks, what about the scene in “Saving Private Ryan” when he is defending the bridge, about to die, pulls out his service auto and starts shooting at the German tank heading his way. Falls into the category of “last great act of defiance”.

Really old, really bad movie: Pete Kelly’s blues starring Jack Webb from the ‘50’s I think...also, Bonny & Clyde

Reading the thread I’m surprised nobody mentions the first Indiana Jones movie. During the shootout in the Tibet bar, Indy will be shooting with his usual Smith and Wesson m1917 revolver, then inexplicably firing the Colt m1911, and back again.

And never again do we see him with a second pistol as a backup or a holdout weapon. (excluding the fourth movie I haven’t seen so can’t address).

Actually, Clint Eastwood was shooting a Colt 1911 throughout "The Rookie."

Try to find Philip Kerr's 'BERLIN NOIR' trilogy about the Berlin cop/PI Bernie Gunther.

The first book (March Violets) is Berlin circa 1935, the second (Pale Criminal)during the war and the third (German Requim) circa 1946. It's great stuff and available seperately or in one volume.

They were written 1989, 1990 & 1991. Kerr has just published a fourth but I'm waiting for paperback.

The front slope of the slide and the trigger guard give it away.
