Just got back from the doctor, and my 13 year old tested positive for swine flu.
THE GOVERNMENT has issued orders to all doctors to no longer treat patients with Tamiflu unless they are bad enough to be admitted to the hospital. They don't want to run out.
Thankfully, my doc gave it to her anyway, so I am hoping I don't have to worry about her getting that bad.
So, I will be giving periodic first hand accounts of the progression of this thing so that FReepers can hear it first hand, rather than relying on the media to tell you how it is.
Her throat started feeling scratchy on Wednesday evening, but she was fine. By 12:30 today, she had a fever of 102.8. She just took her first dose of Tamiflu, which by the way cost 120.00, and that was after our discount. They won't be making any money off of this, will they??!!!!!!
While I might seem lighthearted about this, I am worried. I have two younger children, and my own health problems as well. Being spooked by the media hasn't helped.
If you don't mind, any of you so inclined please say a little prayer for my girls.
We are all now quarantined.
Teeny, my best wishes to you and your family. :)
UPDATE:
Strangest thing, she woke up this morning with NO fever. I gave her no acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as I am a believer of allowing fevers to do their job. She says she feels "fine".
Now, I don't know if it's the Tamiflu working or my herbal remedies, or if as some have said there is a good upswing and then it gets worse, but so far it has behaved far differently than any other illness my kids have had.
This is how it has gone; suddenly very very sick, with strange swollen lumps on her arm and temple, high fever, swabbed and diagnosed at the Doc (I trust him very much, has been my pediatrician for 13 years), to feeling pretty good last night and then fine this morning.
No one else feels bad at all.
????????
Right now I'm just on high alert, watching for any change in any of the girls, pumping them with vitamins and other goodness.
Thanks for your personal report on Oscillococcinum !
I heard taking Vitamin D3 helps , & N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) .
I also heard Oscillococcinum helps ...
Also Ive heard of taking cod liver pills .
An emergency room doctor in Texas said to take N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) & Oscillococcinum together .
It can be found at most health stores.
Causing trouble I see. What the heck did you do this time, young lady??? toetappydude

Media flarfenuggen aside, I Do believe this thing was made in some lab somewhere, how else do the three come together? (/tinfoilhat) And with that comes no immunity to this strain, unlike other strains of seasonal flu.
So, we'll see. So far, so weird. Whether it's my pediatrician or the World "Health" Organization, because this is a new strain I don't think any of them really know what to expect, or how this thing will mutate, whether it'll be devastating or whether it'll just fizzle out.
Regardless, I'm a mommy, and I worry. Damned freeriders.....or whatever that term was...I can't even insult you properly anymore...I'm off mah game...
Am sending prayers for you and your family!
It’s Freeloader.

wait...I thought a free loader was someone who ate your food and slept on your couch, and a free rider was someone who created to "new tax base" by not having children.
Great, now I have to spend precious minoots trying to find the answer to that one sose I can prove you wrong...
Prayers for you and your daughters, and all their young friends, teenyelliott.

Dang my swine flu typos.
It’s probably, not my place to say, but I can ‘hear’ how stressed you are....
You are going to get through this fine. I know it. (This is weird because we are not close, but I am to reassure you. Quix? What is this?)
And when it’s over you are going to look back and laugh about how panicked you are right now.
*HUGS*
I read recently that it's not effective in treating either 6% or 18% of swine flu. I don't remember which. But I remember thinking, "It's still highly effective in most cases".
The problem is that it has the potential to kill a lot of people like it did in 1918? Will it? Doubtful. It’s a perfect storm type of deal.
"Out of 10,000 test cases of Tamiflu used by young people under 18, over half exhibited unusual behavior after taking Tamiflu. That behavior was sometimes as extreme as attempting or committing suicide. Eighteen deaths among young Japanese were associated with taking Tamiflu."
Elderberry Trumps Tamiflu for Flu Remedy
I would still give my kids the Tamiflu, but you need to be aware that it's mind altering and you need to watch them carefully, while they are on it.
I do have elderberry syrup, but am reserving it in case any symptoms show up in my younger kids, and if my 13 year old gets "sick". So far, she was only had a fever for about half a day, and since Friday night has been fine. None of the rest of us have developed any symptoms. I have had everyone in the house on vitamin C food complex, D, echinacea and colloidal silver since Friday.
So far so good.
