Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)
Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no creature comforts. But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor hes called home for the last three years.
To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesnt need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, its an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

More on Fire Prevention Week
CAL FIRE Asks Public’s Help to “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned”
Kids Safety Information Card
Kids Fire Inspection Checklist
Safety Tips for Kids
Each year, the week surrounding the date of October 9th is celebrated as National Fire Prevention Week. Why October 9th? The date commemorates the infamous Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed 250 people and destroyed over 17,000 homes.
Every 39 minutes someone in the U.S. is injured in a home fire. Home fires result in hundreds in California being burned and even killed. Thats why CAL FIRE is teaming up with fire departments across the country for Fire Prevention Week 2009 to urge all residents to Stay Fire Smart! Dont Get Burned.
This years fire prevention week campaign runs October 4 10 and focuses on ways to keep homes fire safe and prevent painful burns. The statistics are staggering. Each year roughly 3,000 people die nationwide as a result of home fires and burns, and more than 200,000 individuals are seen in the nations emergency rooms for burn injuries.
Dont Get Burned
*
Keep hot foods and liquids away from tables and counter edges so they cannot be pulled or knocked over.
*
Have a 3-foot kid-free zone around the stove.
*
Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food or drinking a hot beverage.
*
Teach children that hot things hurt.
*
Be careful when using things that get hot such as curling irons, oven, irons, lamps, heaters.
*
When using heating pads only use for 15-20 minutes at a time and dont lie, sit or place anything on the pad.
Just Right?
*
To avoid scalds, set the thermostat setting in your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees F.
*
Remember young children and older adults skin burns more easily.
*
Consider having anti-scald devices on tub faucets and shower heads to prevent scalds.
*
Test the water before placing a child or yourself in the tub.
*
Never leave young children alone in the tub, shower or near a sink.
*
Be careful about scalding water. The water should feel warm, not hot. Before you put your child in the tub, test the temperature with your wrist, elbow, or the back of your hand. Don’t rely on a tub with a temperature indicator, such as a drain plug that changes color to indicate too hot, too cold, and just right. If you’re using a thermometer with a read-out, infant bath water should be no more than 100 degrees. Even when using a thermometer use your wrist, elbow, or the back of your hand as your main guide.
Cool a Burn
*
Treat a burn right away. Put it in cool water for three to five minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth.
*
If the burn is bigger than your fist or if you have any questions, get medical help right away.
*
Remove all clothing, diapers, jewelry and metal from the burned areas.
Cooking with Caution
*
The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.
*
Pay attention to what you are cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.
*
When you are simmering, boiling, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
*
If you must leave the room even for a short time, turn off the stove.
*
If you have young children, use the stoves back burners whenever possible.
*
Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove.
*
When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting or short sleeves.
*
Allow food cooked in a microwave oven to cool for a few minutes before you take it out.
*
Open microwaved food slowly. Hot steam from the container can cause burns.
The Heat is On
*
Have a 3 foot kid-free zone around open fires and heaters.
*
Use a fireplace screen to keep sparks inside the fireplace.
*
Turn portable space heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.
*
Keep things that can burn, such as paper, bedding, or furniture, at least 3 feet from heaters.
*
Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a professional.
*
Make sure your portable space heater has an auto shut-off so if it is tipped over, it will shut off.
*
Have your chimneys cleaned and inspected before each heating season.
Take it Outside
*
Ask smokers to smoke outside.
*
Give smokers deep, sturdy ashtrays.
*
Never smoke if you are tired, have taken medicine, drugs, or alcohol that makes you sleepy.
*
Keep smoking materials away from things that can burn, like bedding, furniture, and clothing.
Stay Grounded
*
Keep lamps, light fixtures, and light bulbs away from anything that can burn, such as lamp shades, bedding, curtains, and clothing.
*
Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords.
*
Use extension cords for temporary wiring only. Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician.
*
If you have young children in your home have tamper-resistant electrical receptacles.
*
Call a qualified electrician or landlord if you have recurring problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers, discolored or warm wall outlets, flickering lights or a burning or rubbery small coming form an appliance.
Neighborhood Watch
*
With the economic downturn, it is important to keep a watchful eye on your neighborhood. Encourage your community to implement an anti-arson program.
*
Keep trash from collecting on your property.
*
Remove abandoned vehicles from your property.
*
Remove dead branches that could be used as a fuel source.
Fire-Safety Basics
*
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
*
For best protection use both photoelectric and ionization technology. You can use individual ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or combination units that contain both technologies in the same unit.
*
Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
*
Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
*
Make sure everyone can hear the sound of the smoke alarms.
*
Have a home fire escape plan. Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible, and a meeting place outside. Practice your escape plan twice a year.
*
When the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out.
*
If you are building or remodeling your home, consider a home fire sprinkler system.

You are welcome, there are so many ways we can use the simple solar methods and so few do.
LOL, I can’t bear to throw out the large coffee cans [now plastic], last winter I had a leaking kitchen faucet, so I filled them with water and stacked them in front of the west facing sliding glass door, that will not open.
I still hope to put a top on them and then set plants on it, might give me a little solar heated area, for plants and the water to keep them alive a few more days in a disaster.
I used 55 gallon barrels of water for heat storage in the greenhouses........once upon a time.
The plants in pots grew well on them and the greenhouse did not freeze, even with several days of snow.

Using Patient Demographic Data to Improve Care for Diverse Populations
AHRQ is collaborating with Diversity Rx in its “Your Voice” initiative. With funding from The California Endowment, the Your Voice initiative is helping people in the field of cross cultural health care to network, collaborate, offer support, and learn from each other using Web 2.0 and virtual learning tools.
Applications are being accepted now for a Peer Learning Network — a group of 50 to 100 people — on using patient demographic information to improve health care for culturally diverse populations. Participants, who interact with each other through a members-only listserv, ask each other questions, share resources and expertise, engage in collaborative problem solving, and discuss real-life situations. The moderated conversation can be augmented by guest experts and Webinar presentations.
For more details about how the network will operate and to sign up, please visit: http://www.diversityrxconference.org/PLN. You’ll find a link to the sign-up page for this network under “Network Topics.” Do not delay; the Peer Learning Network is scheduled to begin October 12, 2009, although applications will be accepted after that date as space permits.

Sorry to be so long getting back.
I have researched the precooked dried rice but you can do a lot more than just rice.
1) Cook the rice
2) Rinse the starch off well in cool water.
3) Spread out evenly on drying trays
4) Temp at 130
5) Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even drying.
The same basic procedure can be used for all forms of rice, wheat berries, barley, oats and pasta.
Since it has been precooked you can add in the last few minutes of cooking.
Some varieties of beans will split with precooking and drying..But that is just fine for soups and refried beans.

They are attacking from every angle..... Czarina (a pita supporter) with NOAA :
“But anyone who wants to fish the offshore wrecks had better get it done this weekend. Barring any courtroom challenge by recreational advocates, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Monday will shut down the black sea bass fishery beyond three miles of shore for six months.”
Oh, and did I mention that they have an optional 6 month extension for that too...
The life-blood of the offshore fishing fleet over the entire winter has been yanked from them. Fishing party boats will take the loss and many probably lose their boats over this. Many cancellations for bookings are being reported.
The report they based it on was a fish survey of recreational shoreline fisherman and they applied it to the offshore and commercial take without actually checking their real take.
Everywhere you turn, they are pulling the rug out from under people... Recovery? Not with stunts like this, but maybe if you paid for your fishing trip with rubles, rupees, euros or yen - you know some hard currency.........

TECHNIQUES USED BY FRAUDSTERS ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
10/01/09Fraudsters continue to hijack accounts on social networking sites and spread malicious software by using various techniques. One technique involves the use of spam to promote phishing sites, claiming there has been a violation of the terms of agreement or some other type of issue which needs to be resolved. Other spam entices users to download an application or view a video. Some spam appears to be sent from users’ “friends”, giving the perception of being legitimate. Once the user responds to the phishing site, downloads the application, or clicks on the video link, their computer, telephone or other digital device becomes infected.
Another technique used by fraudsters involves applications advertised on social networking sites, which appear legitimate; however, some of these applications install malicious code or rogue anti-virus software. Other malicious software gives the fraudsters access to your profile and personal information. These programs will automatically send messages to your “friends” list, instructing them to download the new application too.
Infected users are often unknowingly spreading additional malware by having infected websites posted on their webpage without their knowledge. Friends are then more apt to click on these sites since they appear to be endorsed by their contacts.
Tips on avoiding these tactics:
* Adjust website privacy settings. Some networking sites have provided useful options to assist in adjusting these settings to help protect your identity.
* Be selective of your friends. Once selected, your “friends” can access any information marked as “viewable by all friends.”
* You can select those who have “limited” access to your profile. This is for those whom you do not wish to give full friend status to or with whom you feel uncomfortable sharing personal information.
* Disable options and then open them one by one such as texting and photo sharing capabilities. Users should consider how they want to use the social networking site. If it is only to keep in touch with people then perhaps it would be better to turn off the extra options which will not be used.
* Be careful what you click on. Just because someone posts a link or video to their “wall” does not mean it is safe.
Those interested in becoming a user of a social networking site and/or current users are recommended to familiarize themselves with the site’s policies and procedures before encountering such a problem.
Each social networking site may have different procedures on how to handle a hijacked or infected account; therefore, you may want to reference their help or FAQ page for instructions.
Individuals who experienced such incidents are encouraged to file a complaint at www.IC3.gov reporting the incident.

So as it turns out, even the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has its own SWAT team. You dont need to know. You cant know. Thats what Kathy Norris, a 60-year-old grandmother of eight, was told when she tried to ask court officials why, the day before, federal agents had subjected her home to a furious search. The agents who spent half a day ransacking Mrs. Norris longtime home in Spring, Texas, answered no questions while they emptied file cabinets, pulled books off shelves, rifled through drawers and closets, and threw the contents on the floor. “
