Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

[List of invasions is live titles at link.

For a long time I have thought that some of these actions were related, for if you are getting several invasions in Las Vegas, you can switch to San Diego and/ or Denver and will find the same thing going on, then several days of not hearing the dispatcher mention a single one, I find this true with riots and on the street attacks.

I always listen to fire and police links:

Earlier this week, we ran a story highlighting a recent episode of Spike TV’’s , Surviving Disaster. The post and the show focused on ‘How To Survive A Home Invasion‘. It was a brief post with a small video clip, however the response was anything but small. Within just the first couple of hours of posting, over 1000 people had read it… That’s unusual for a post that is not a “breaking news event”. I received a number of emails and a variety of questions.

Why so much interest? I’m still not completely sure but I believe it’s partially due to the following. To most people home invasions are a shockingly new and horrific type of crime that few are prepared for, or know how to prepare for. Most have read about them, are shocked by the violent and disturbing nature, but they themselves and the people they know have not been personally affected. People see the rising epidemic and understand that it’s no longer a crime relegated to just the big cities. They see the stories in their local newspaper and they’re afraid it could just as easily happen to them. They want to know how to prepare and hopefully prevent such an attack.

So how bad is it…. Take a look, the stories listed below. All of these stories appeared in the news in the past 24 – 36 hours, yet they represent only a fraction of the home invasions that are taking place across the country. Keep in mind, there are people behind each of these headlines, people who will probably never again enjoy the sense of safety and security they had just 48 hours ago.

* Man pistol whipped in Southwest Miami-Dade home invasion
* Novi police have arrested five men they believe to be responsible for a string of nine home invasions that have taken place in Novi since July 30.
* Home invasion leads to SWAT standoff
* Patriots CB Jonathan Wilhite victim of a home invasion early Sunday morning
* 1 Shot in Leavenworth Home Invasion
* 77 year old homeowner Hurt During Home Invasion Robbery
* Police investigating violent home invasion
* Police searching for suspects in Lubbock home invasion
* DeKalb Home Invasion Leaves 1 Injured
* Two men were arrested by Corpus Christi police after a home invasion Wednesday night.
* 2 arrested in St. Bernard home invasion
* Home Invasion Robbery in Centralia
* Shocked Neighbors Gather After Home Invasion Homicide
* Morning Home Invasion Injures Two
* Fairfield Home Invasion Gang Busted
* Two suspects on the run after violent home invasion
* Three people attack 69-year-old man in South Bend home invasion

As I mentioned in the previous post, Home invasions are among the most insidious of crimes, shattering the sense of safety and security for children and families for many years after the crime, often for a lifetime. With the rise in these types of crimes it’s important to learn what you can do to safeguard your home and family.

What can you do to protect your home and family from such an attack? I had planned on writing a post on how to survive a terror attack on a hotel but instead, next Tuesday I’ll publish a special report detailing the steps you can take to reduce your risk and increase the odds of thwarting a home invasion.

Surviving a home invasion begins long before the actual event. In the report we’ll discuss the following:

* Specific actions you can take that can reduce your risk
* Fortifying your home against a home invasion
* Creating an emergency plan to thwart a home invasion
* Recognizing the signs that you have been targeted
* The first 60 seconds of a home invasion
* After the first 60 seconds
* New Products and Technologies for safeguarding your home

DATURA POISONING - RUSSIA: (SAMARA)
************************************
A ProMED-mail post
http://www.promedmail.org
ProMED-mail is a program of the
International Society for Infectious Diseases
http://www.isid.org

Date: Sun 13 Sep 2009
Source: IA “novopol.ru” [in Russian, trans. Corr.ATS, edited]
http://www.novopol.ru/text74955.html

A total of 11 pupils from the school N19 in Novokuybyshevsk [Samara
province] were poisoned by datura [a dangerous plant containing
atropine-like alkaloids]. All the children were rushed to the city
hospital. A nurse and a doctor stayed on duty at the school to
identify any new cases. All schoolchildren are also being
[interviewed] by drug abuse specialists. The public health
administration of the city collected samples of the plant and
submitted them for testing to the department of Pharmacology at the
Medical University of Samara.

Communicated by:
ProMED-RUS Correspondent Vadim Melnik

[There are a number of species of _Datura_, whose common names include
moon trumpet, jimson weed, and devil’s thorn apple. And there are a
number of different species giving a slightly different shape to the
leaves or flowers. However, they all contain the same toxic agents,
just in slightly different proportions. Photos may be seen at
http://www.wildflowersofontario.ca/jimsonweed1.jpg or
http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/jimsonweed/jimson4.jpg
The thorny fruit that contributes to its name may be viewed at
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/D/W-SO-DSTR-FR.001.html

The plant has a distinctive white trumpet shaped bloom. The seeds and
flowers of the plants contain tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine,
hyoscyamine, and atropine. The alkaloids cause tachycardia,
hyperthermia, hyperemia, and hallucinations, which may result in
bizarre and abnormal behavior. Mistakenly the seeds have been used by
some in a substitute for other illicit drugs in hopes of producing the
same kind of “high.” It is possible for deaths to occur from this
because of the cardiac properties. Those recovering from the
hallucinations and photophobia report it to be entirely unpleasant.

The memory tool for jimson weed intoxication is “red as a beet, dry as
a bone” (flushed, hot, red skin) and “mad as a hatter” (from Alice in
Wonderland, for its hallucinogenic properties.) The seeds have been
collected by addicts trying to get “high” because of the
hallucinogenic properties. The cardiac properties associated with
these alkaloids have resulted in death.

This brief article does not tell us if the plant is near the school,
which would allow access to the seeds, or if the seeds were
distributed by an individual or even included in a salad, as has
happened in some locations.

Treatment for _Datura_ spp. Intoxication is physostigmine, also known
by the trade name Antilirium. - Mod.TG]

FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR/OIL

September 14, 2009
FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR
Posted by Stephen Tvedten

It has long been said that, while the Black Death/Plague was raging in France during the Middle Ages, a number of incredible burglaries of plague victims’ homes was happening. No effort was made, however, to apprehend the thieves, as it was believed that they would soon succumb to the dangerous contamination in the homes they had robbed. But, the thieves carried on their crime spree for some time, and people finally began to wonder why these thieves had not become ill and died. It was only then that the authorities began to pursue them… in order to find out the secret of their apparent immunity to the deadly Plague.

Once the burglars had been apprehended, they struck a bargain with the authorities, that they should be set free in exchange for revealing the secret to their immunity to the Plague. The bargain reached, the four thieves revealed their herbal disinfecting formula that rendered them safe and immune from the Black Death/Plague.

This ancient herbal formula, we now call “Four Thieves Vinegar”, can still protect us against swine flu, smallpox, and biological weapons.

FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR

1 part lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), dried (Note: Lavendar oil is cytotoxic and a powerful allergen)

1 part sage (Salvia officinalis), dried

1 part thyme (Thymus vulgaris) , dried

1 part lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), dried

1 part hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), dried

1 part peppermint (Mentha nigricans), dried

1 handful garlic (Allium sativum) cloves

Raw (unpasteurized) wine or organic apple cider vinegar

• In a clean glass jar, place all the various dry, organic ingredients.

• Add raw (unpasteurized), organic wine or apple cider vinegar to cover

• Place jar in a cool place and let sit, at room temperature, for six weeks.

• Strain off all the herbs and garlic, and pour into a clean glass bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid.

HOW TO USE FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR

• Take a teaspoonful several times daily.

• Add to salads either directly or in a salad dressing.

• For personal protection, add a teaspoonful to bath water.

• Use as a topical spray for disinfecting surfaces and/or skin

ALTERNATIVE FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR

wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

juniper berries (Juniperus spp.)

rosemary (Rosimarinus officinalis)

camphor (Cinnamonum camphora)

sage (Salvia officinalis)

cinnamon (Cinnamoomum verum)

cloves (Syzgium aromaticum)

organic apple cider or wine vinegar

• In a clean glass jar, place all the alternative dry, organic ingredients.

• Add raw (unpasteurized), organic wine or apple cider vinegar to cover

• Place jar in a cool place and let sit, at room temperature, for six weeks.

• Strain off all the herbs and materials, and pour into a clean glass bottle or jar with a tight fitting lid.

FOUR THIEVES OIL

Clove oil (Syzgium aromaticum) 200 drops or 1/2 ounce

Lemon oil (Citrus limon) 175 drops

Cinnamon Bark oil (Cinnamoomum verum) 100 drops

Eucalyptus oil ( Eucalyptus radiata) 75 drops

Rosemary oil (Rosimarinus officinalis) 50 drops

The above Thieves Oil blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils was tested at Weber State University for its potent antimicrobial properties. Thieves oil was found to have a 99.96% percent kill rate against airborne bacteria. The oils are highly antiviral, antiseptic, anti-catarrhyal, antibacterial, anti-infectious and also help to stimulate the immune system circulatory and respiratory systems and help protect the body against such illnesses as flu, colds, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, cuts etc.

A study by researchers in France in 2008 tested bactericidal activity of 13 different essential oils and had similar results, with cinnamon being the most effective. At concentrations as low as 10 percent or less, cinnamon oil was also effective against several antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus and E. coli.

How to use Thieves Oil

Caution: the cinnamon and clove oils may cause reactions in some people e.g., irritation to lips or sensitve membranes. Chemically sensitive, fair skinned, blue-eyed individuals, redheads and those who tend to sunburn easily need to heed and dilute Thieves oil in a carrier oil (such as almond or olive oils) before directly applying to their skin. Always test Thieves Oil on a small area before applying it overall. If you have no reaction: then try using 1-2 drops of Thieves Oil on the bottom of your feet and also at the nape of your neck. Other places could Thieves Oil can be applied are under your arms and/or directly on the chest.

Prevention and Remediation - Thieves Oil allowed to slowly diffuse into an infested/contaminated area for 72 hours will also safely and far more effectively remove virtually all toxic mold and bacteria problems for weeks and is safe for most workers to breathe as it is being diffused.

Wheelchair-Bound Man Tackles Westminster Sex Assault Suspect

Credits Texas High School Football For His Strength, Speed
By Lance Hernandez, 7NEWS Reporter

POSTED: 5:50 pm MDT October 1, 2009
UPDATED: 9:53 pm MDT October 1, 2009

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Cameron Aulner’s wheelchair doesn’t stop him from living large.

He works from it, plays basketball in it, and has even tackled a sex assault suspect with it.

And he’s taking it all in stride.

“I never had the opportunity to serve in the military,” the 22-year-old told 7NEWS. “But I’m still an American, I’m still a patriot.”

Aulner had a chance to prove that last month while manning a Comcast sales table inside the Walmart at West 94th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Westminster.

“I heard someone yell, ‘Stop that man!’” Aulner said.

Court documents indicate that the suspect, Kevin Salyers, approached a 10-year-old girl in the toy department and groped her backside.

The arrest affidavit stated that when the girl screamed, Salyers took off running.

Chris Blevin heard the scream, then overheard the girl tell another adult that “some guy grabbed me.”

Blevin asked for a description, then took off after the suspect. When he yelled for help, Aulner swung into action.

“I went around the table as fast as I could and I tackled him,” Aulner said. “I put my shoulder into it and grabbed him.”

The cable salesman said he and another individual held onto the suspect until police arrived.

“When someone is in need, you help them,” Aulner said. “That’s what being an American is all about.”

Continues, with more details and photos...........a ten year old is not safe in a toy department, full of adults, sick world.

Consumers Warned Not to Eat Certain Imported Dried Plums

Texas Department of State Health Services

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 1, 2009 – The Texas Department of State Health Services is warning consumers not to eat certain imported dried plums and products containing imported dried plums because they have elevated levels of lead.

Most of the products typically are sold as salted or candied treats in Asian and Hispanic markets but also are available in other retail outlets. DSHS officials believe the dried plums came from Asia, but an investigation to identify specific sources is ongoing. Test results from the DSHS laboratory in Austin show that the dried plum products or products containing dried plums contain lead levels ranging from 0.11 parts per million to 30.3 parts per million.

Health officials say lead should not be consumed in any amount but DSHS used a U.S. Food and Drug Administration established maximum of 0.1 parts per million for candy as a guide in assessing elevated lead levels in the dried plums and dried plum products.

A list of products and product photographs are available online at: www.dshs.state.tx.us/foods/. Consumers are advised to discard any of the products and to check the Web page periodically for updates. More dried plum products may be added as pending laboratory test results become available.

DSHS is working with the FDA and with health officials in California and New York, where some of the product distributors are located, in an investigation. DSHS also is working with Texas distributors on product recalls.

Officials emphasized that the warning does not apply to dried plums, or prunes, from the United States.

Lead can accumulate in the body over time. Too much can cause health problems, including delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies. Pregnant women, infants and young children especially should avoid exposure to lead. People concerned about blood lead levels should contact their physician or health clinic to ask about testing.

Note: List of products with elevated lead levels follows.

Thriftify!

DIY Wind Generator for under $200
May 6, 2009 · 2 Comments
Photo: Mike Davis

Photo: Mike Davis

Here’s a step-by-step guide to building your own wind generator made out of basic materials like PVC pipe and sheet metal. Author Mike Davis explains how he started on this project:

I started by Googling for information on home-built wind turbines. There are a lot of them out there in an amazing variety of designs and complexities. All of them had five things in common though:

1. A generator
2. Blades
3. A mounting that keeps it turned into the wind
4. A tower to get it up into the wind
5. Batteries and an electronic control system

I reduced the project to just five little systems. If attacked one at a time, the project didn’t seem too terribly difficult. I decided to start with the generator. My online research showed that a lot of people were building their own generators. That seemed a bit too complicated, at least for a first effort. Others were using surplus permanent magnet DC motors as generators in their projects. This looked like a simpler way to go. So I began looking into what motors were best for the job.

This easy to follow guide is available on Mike’s website. Link.

You may want to read all the way through, because he overcame the problem he had with a weak area of the blades later in the article and that seems a very logical fix. DW

Did You Know??

Colognes are light, fresh fragrances. An Italian living in Cologne, Germany made the orginal cologne in the early part of the eighteenth century.

Colognes are becoming very popular again.
The one I enjoy making and using is a Citrus Cologne.I use a 4 ounce dark bottle to blend it in.
The aroma is very clean and fresh with the citrus as the top note.

Ingredients;
I first blend together all the Essential Oils in a pint size jar.

Bergamot Essential Oil; 40 drops
Thyme Essential Oil; 2 to 3 drops
Lavender Essential oil; 12 drops
Lemon Essential Oil; 15 to 20 drops
Rosemary Essential Oil; 5 drops
Neroli Essential Oil; 10 drops
Petitgrain Essential Oil; 10 drops

Once the essential oils are in the jar, cover with a white plastic lid. Shake to dissolve the essential oils.
Then add 2 tablespoons of Orange Flower Water to the blend and shake again.
Once this is done I move the Cologne to a dark cool cupboard. Each day I roll the jar back & forth.
I cure the blend for two weeks before using it. Each time you use it you must shake it because some of the essential oils may separate and float on the top.
I’ve found that when I cure it for at least two weeks, the oils all blend together.

2. Massage Oils

Sweet Almond oil is the most commonly used carrier/base Oil. However, Sweet Almond becomes rancid very easily!!
Grape Seed and Canola oils are good oils with a good shelf life, which easily absorbes. Massage Therapists and Beauticians widley use them.

Hazelnut oil is very rich and nourishing, although it is expensive.

Peanut oil, Coconut, or palm oil are too heavy and is known to cause skin break-out.

I use a small amount of Vitamin E Oil in addition to the other base oils.
