Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition Category: Roundups | Comments(15)

Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

The Frugal Roundup

How to Brew Your Own Beer and Maybe Save Some Money. A fantastic introduction to home brewing, something I’ve never done myself, but always been interested in trying. (@Generation X Finance)

Contentment: A Great Financial Principle. If I had to name one required emotion for living a frugal lifestyle it would be contentment. Once you are content with your belongings and your lot in life you can ignore forces attempting to separate you from your money. (@Personal Finance by the Book)

Use Energy Star Appliances to Save On Utility Costs. I enjoyed this post because it included actual numbers, and actual total savings, from someone who upgraded to new, energy star appliances. (@The Digerati Life)

Over-Saving for Retirement? Is it possible to “over-save” for retirement? Yes, I think so. At some point I like the idea of putting some money aside in taxable investments outside of retirement funds, to be accessed prior to traditional retirement age. (@The Simple Dollar)

40 Things to Teach My Kids Before They Leave Home. A great list of both practical and philosophical lessons to teach your kids before they reach the age where they know everything. I think that now happens around 13 years-old. (@My Supercharged Life)

5 Reasons To Line Dry Your Laundry. My wife and I may soon be installing a clothesline in our backyard. In many neighborhoods they are frowned upon - one of the reasons I don’t like living in a neighborhood. I digress. One of our neighbors recently put up a clothesline, and we might just follow his lead. (@Simple Mom)

Fireside Coffee Co. Recalls Chai Tea Affected by Plainview Milk Product Recall

Contact:
Angie Root, 800-344-5282
Fireside Coffee Company, Inc.
3239 Elms Rd.
Swartz Creek, MI 48473

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 27, 2009 - Fireside Coffee Co. Swartz Creek, MI is recalling all Fireside Chai Tea that contains dry milk produced by Plainview Milk Products after June 2007. Plainview Milk Products of Plainview, MN has recalled its instant non-fat dry milk because of potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Fireside Coffee Co. Chai Tea affected by this recall was distributed nationwide in retail stores, through mail orders and at art fairs. The Chai tea under recall comes in the following four flavors: Spiced, Chocolate, Vanilla and Decaf Vanilla. Due to an uncontrollable system glitch, an email notification was released in error on July 27, 2009 entitled: “Publix Issues Voluntary Recall on Publix Gourmet Peanut Mix Because of Possible Health Risk”. This recall was properly conducted by Publix in a timely and appropriate manner in Feb 2009. Please disregard the July 27 email message. We apologize for any public concern generated in response to this error.

MedWatch logo MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

Body Building Products (Marketed as Containing Steroids or Steroid-like Substances)

Audience: Consumers and all healthcare professionals

FDA notified both healthcare professionals and their patients about new safety information concerning products marketed for body building and increasing muscle mass, frequently marketed as alternatives to anabolic steroids for increasing muscle mass and strength and sold both online and in retail stores. These products are promoted to athletes to improve sports performance and to aid in recovery from training and sporting events. Although marketed as dietary supplements, they are not dietary supplements, but instead are unapproved new drugs that have not been reviewed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness.

Adverse event reports received by the FDA for body building products that are labeled to contain steroids or steroid alternatives involve men and include cases of serious liver injury, stroke, kidney failure and pulmonary embolism (blockage of an artery in the lung). Due to the potentially serious health risks associated with using these types of products, the FDA recommends that consumers immediately stop using all body building products that claim to contain steroids or steroid-like substances. Health care professionals are advised to ask their patients about any over-the-counter products they may be using, including products marketed as dietary supplements.

Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events related to the use of these products to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program, either online, by regular mail or by fax [link in footer below].

>>>Can anyone explain how the hell our economy can be recoverying when unemployment continues to rise?<<<

We just have to listen carefully to Jose Biden:

‘We have to keep spending money so we don’t go bankrupt.’
(or words to that effect.)

Hey, can I borrow $100 bill so I can scan it and print up a whole bunch so I can spend it - you know, like the N. Koreans did with them superbills. You know, we gotta keep spending worthless paper or we will go bankrupt. It’s bound to make the economy better, and I’ll make a boatload outta the deal. /s

So—are you paying minimum payments on a credit card?

A frugality blog called “Squawkfox” has created a credit card calculator on the Internet. You put in your current balance, the interest rate on the card, and both the minimum payment in dollars your account requires and the minimum percentage of the unpaid balance it also requires (you pay the larger of the two figures).

The calculator will then tell you how many months and years that it will take to pay off the debt at the minimum rate—and how much interest that will mean to the credit card company.

It will probably shock you!

See http://www.squawkfox.com/tools/credit-card-calculator/

This should give you ample incentive to pay off the credit card as quickly as possible!

Six Words That Saved Me $17,893 - And Can Save You Even More

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 03:00 AM PDT

The following guest post is from one of my favorite writers, Neal Frankle of Wealth Pilgrim. After reading the post, head over to Neal’s site and check out his free subscription options.

“What is the purpose of this?”

Those are the six words. There you have it.

Next time you want to spend money on anything, ask yourself this question first. I guarantee that if you do, your investing/spending intelligence will expand so much that you’ll put Einstein to shame.

This brainstorm didn’t come to me overnight. As you’ll see, I developed it over many years of extremely painful research. But make no mistake. This wisdom is powerful and transformative.

You might chuckle, but the idea came to me after sitting through countess Bar and Bat Mitzvah “celebrations”.

For those of you who don’t live in New York, Los Angeles or Miami, this is a celebration of a 12 or 13 year old Jewish child coming of age. Usually, the parents throw an extravagant and ridiculous party for said offspring. The price tag for one of these shin-digs usually eclipses that of an automobile. If you’re lucky - like me - it’s a used Kia. If you aren’t so lucky, it’s a brand new Lamborghini.

I have 3 daughters and I’ve suffered through dozens of these very loud parties.

What happens is, all your kid’s friends’ parents invite you to the parties and you almost have to go. It wasn’t so bad after my eldest put us through this grinder with all her friends’ parties.

But I have 3 daughters….remember?

It reminds me of Michael Corleone’s famous quote, “Just when I thought I was out they pulled me back in.”

When my second child hit age 12 she put us back at the beginning of this process again. Oh the humanity!

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a good party as much as the next fellow. Loud music doesn’t bother me all that much - even when the kids do the Macarena or “the Chicken Dance” to Madonna or Britney Spears at 200 decibels.

What I find intolerable is mindless extravagance and often times that’s what these events are.

Each of these parties was a replica of the other. Sometimes I forgot which party I was at. They were all exactly the same. Same food. Same games. Same schtick. Very very forgettable..

I can guarantee you, that if the parents who threw these parties had asked ,”What is the purpose of this?” they would have saved themselves a bundle and enjoyed a more meaningful celebration with their children.

If you’re completely honest, there is really only one reason why people spend the kind of money they do on weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. They do it because everyone else does.

Sorry.

For me, that’s not a good enough reason to mortgage my right kidney.

If you want to celebrate a child’s coming of age, do something meaningful rather than mindless.

If you want to celebrate the joining of two people into one couple, follow the same advice.

The best way to insure that what you do is indeed meaningful is to ask yourself, “What is the purpose of this”.

Of course, you don’t have to wait for your two-year old’s Bar Mitzvah or wedding to start profiting from this concept.

Ask yourself the same question before you buy your next car or carton of milk.

This probably makes perfect sense to you but you may still encounter one or two problems when you try to implement it.

The first problem could be your spouse or life partner. The second problem may be your children.

Let’s consider the later first because it’s a much easier hurdle to clear.

Let’s say your kids try to convince you they need one of the following:

1. A gold-plated, ivy-league undergraduate degree in history when you could save 75% by going to a state school.
2. A wedding that cost more than a Greek Island when they could have a wonderful and beautiful celebration in your backyard.

Whip out your 6 word Spend-0-Slayer and ask them, “What is the purpose of this?”

They might explain why they need a degree or a wedding but they won’t be able to justify why they need the priciest version of each.

This is where the rubber meets the road. This is where the corn leaves the husk.

Ask them “What is the purpose of the costlier version when the lower cost version seems to give you what you need?”

If your kids have watched too much “Law and Order”, they may be able to make a case.

Sometimes, the more expensive choice is indeed a better decision.

For example, if your six year old has outgrown her bike and really wants the spanky new red one with the streamers coming out the handle bars…..you might want to go for it.

Depending on the circumstances, it could be a small investment that will pay huge dividends in terms of self-esteem for your daughter.

But everyone has a limit. I don’t think that spending $25,000 on a party for a kid who can’t even shave yet makes sense. I also don’t think that spending that much (and more) on a wedding is particularly clever. Tell you what…..if your child is having a Bar Mitzvah or wedding and you want to spend some dough to help build their self-esteem…..spring for the spanky red bike with the streamers. That should do the trick.

If your child wants you to spend a ridiculous amount of money foolishly, look at this as a teachable moment. Don’t tell them what you already know. Keep asking them the magic 6 words until they admit that they want what they want because everyone else has one or does it that way.

An undergraduate degree is meant to help you get a job so you can support yourself.

A wedding is meant to celebrate marriage.

None of these are meant to impress other people but that’s what many of us use them for. Explain to the kids that by making the more expensive choice, they may actually have less of what they ultimately want. You’ll only get them to see that if you ask the question - what is the purpose of this?

Take the example of the undergraduate degree. My middle daughter recently graduated high-school and after being accepted at some very pricey schools, we decided as a family that the best choice would be a lower cost state college. She realized that by agreeing to this, she would graduate college with no debt and some money leftover to help fund an MBA. She was clear about the purpose of her undergraduate degree - help her get a job or continue on to get her post-grad education. If she would have gone to a pricey Ivy League school, she’d finish college in debt and with limited choices.

Let’s go on to the second more formidable problem - your spouse.

The best way I can help you deal with this is by way of example.

I wanted to have a small Bat Mitzvah for my daughters but my wife would have none of it. While we didn’t go nuts, we spent a lot more than I wanted to. Going back to my car analogy, my wife’s budget for the party was something along the lines of a new Camry and my budget was closer to that a used moped scooter. We settled on a budget that was closer in line with that of a used-Kia. We compromised.

When it came to the Bat Mitzvah party, the answer to “what is the purpose of this” was clear - make my wife happy… stay out of bankruptcy and divorce court at the same time.

Pick your battles well. But use the 6 word spend-o-slayer- it may turn out to be your most effective weapon to tame the extravagance beast.

Like teaching classes in Spanish or students refusing to speak English, even when English-only students or teachers are around. IMO, they’re the ones that have always created the divide when I went to school. And probably still.<<<

Or, in my experience, it was “pick on the weak one”, I had no other whites to support me, so I was evil one out.

In Jr. High School, we had one African girl at the school, she was always alone, and I would look at her across the area and remember what that ‘alone’ feeling felt like.

If possible, I always asked her to join us, but then I was not a top dog there either, so was limited in being any better off than she was.

LOL, as I recall her, she was quiet and very ladylike.

One idiot couple had 17 guns and ammo stolen. Foolish not to at least have a gun safe. But the items to be used, that’s the odd part. Even the sheriff attributed it either to guerilla campers (that live in the woods) or unemployed whose benefits have run out.<<<

LOL, in my day we were called “Fruit Tramps” and a lot of other names, guerilla campers is a new name for poor and broken folks.

I do not remember my dad ever stealing anything.

We did live in the camps, the big ones at the farms or the under a tree in the river bottoms, made no difference, it is a matter of survival.

In the 1930’s we were a working society, that is what one did, it was our way of life.

Today, those campers are having withdrawl pains from their
tv sets with many channels, the computers and internet, fancy movies, none of it real and all of it used in their destruction of a society.

The tv taught them the best methods to steal, and little else, that will help them survive.

To the readers of this, I can only say that living in the city has literally blinded me to the truth, even though I knew it was happening. I wonder how many other things I ignore? Many economists and trends predictors have called for food shortages and food riots in the fall, and with what I saw last week, I have new reason to believe them.
But then, that’s the real problem isn’t it? Belief... <<<<

I know / knew this area, it is where we went in the 1930’s to work as we escaped the Texas dust bowl.

If they are not producing food there, then we are importing even more food, from where?

China and Mexico and it will not make us healthy.

All this is so depressing, I would expect every American to be upset and the truth is few have a clue to the dangers we are facing.

And soon, with Obama’s new disease care reform proposals, America will find itself destitute and diseased, unable to climb out of the medication dependence pit it has dug for itself.<<<

The great American take over, as it happens before our very eyes.

The heat wave is about to break over here so maybe you’ll get some relief too. Your kitties sound like real survivors. I’m not sure what you could leave out for them to eat.<<<

I leave out canned cat food, soft and easy to eat, when their teeth are still not strong enough for dry food and water.

I gave up and took the weakest one out of the box, it was too hot here for even me to survive.

They now live under the recliner and come out to eat and use a small sand box, LOL, they raise caine if there is a shortage of food for them.

They are so skinny and weak that they do not have a bit of play in them and are wild as can be, they are quiet willing to attack me....LOL, the hand that feeds them.

I have fans and an evaporative cooler, but nothing works in this heat.

A wet towel and lots of cold sluice downs, helps for 3 minutes.

Wealth Confiscation and Cash

MSNBC ran an article Monday on the dangers of keeping cash. The story “Money hiders risk a wealth of woes” documents the risks involved in keeping cash stored at your home and not in banks. The story is an obvious banking industry propaganda piece planted to scare Americans into depositing their increasing and untraceable saving into lending institution where the usage and existence of those funds can be monitored by the government.<<<

True and add to that the fact that large amounts of money, will convince the cops that you are dealing dope or at the least a money launderer for the jihadi.

Even in real estate world 25 years ago, we did not accept $10,000. in cash for payment, if that was your plan, we or the title company, insisted on you paying us with checks, or even money orders, for at $10,000. cash we had to report it to the Feds.

A Woman Screams
I woke up Saturday night to a womans scream. It was around 2 in the morning and I was sound asleep with the dogs. A high pitched scream jolted us awake. Most of the windows were open and the evening was very warm. The scream appeared to come from the hill right outside the bedroom window.<<<

The coyote cry will change, they often sound like a small puppy in trouble, so something will be drawn to them.

In the Gila River bottom, I spent several hours, searching for a lost Siamese cat, I could hear it, but never find it.

Then we went into the river bottom and found mountain lion tracks as big as dinner plates, per each foot print and decided we should leave.

As we left, a young mountain lion raced the truck “just for the fun of it”.

Don’t Mace The Mice<<<

If he is in an area that the tree huggers got laws passed in, he might as well give up, for the mice take over in hours after a new law goes in.

Here they stopped ranching, said the cows stepped on the Mexican Voles tunnels and killed them.

The dictionary says “small round eared mouse”.

They took over my place in the hills, I came home one night to find one on the top step, attempting to open the screen door.

My neighbor did not have anything to bait his mouse trap with and used newspaper, soaked in catsup, from the leftover packet that had been in the hamburger bag and it worked so well that he kept using catsup and newspaper.

On a few occasions I have been awoken in the early morning hours by a low noise that can best be described as a diesel truck idling outside the house the noise has been accompanied by a gentle pulsing that you can actually feel in the bed and even standing in the middle of the house. I have heard this noise probably five times usually around three in the morning. The dogs can also hear the noise and twice they woke me with their growling.<<<

I have heard of this before and it is always someone drilling a tunnel under ground.

It maybe someone building a hideout, or even someone mining something under ground, the military also does this for silos, etc.
