LONDON Russell Crowe is in the early stages of negotiations to reprise the role of Jack Aubrey as a British sea captain in a new movie version from the Master & Commander series of novels.
Crowe told The Associated Press on Friday that a script based mostly on the eleventh novel of Patrick O'Brian's 20-novel series, The Reverse of the Medal, had been written, but that discussions were at a very early stage.
(snip)
The AubreyMaturin novels consists of 20 books and one partly written before his death in 2000 by O'Brian, all set during the Napoleonic Wars.
The 2003 movie Master and Commander took material from several of the novels. The Reverse of the Medal, published in 1986, sees Aubrey in the Caribbean in his ship HMS Surprise, where he meets his illegitimate son Samuel Panda, a Catholic priest born from an illicit liaison.
Crowe gave no indication of when filming could start...

I ignore critics and decide for myself which movies I like.
The trouble with trying to do another is, where to start? Master & Commander was cobbled together from 3 or 4 different books. It was an OK movie, but overall it was disappointing to a great many fans of the Aubrey/Maturin series.
YES!
It was an excellent movie.
I want him to catch that French man-o-war.
Duke it out in the Magellan Straits.
Bladerunner is one of a handful of movies I watch over and over and over. It is arguably the best crafted film ever.
For fans of the Patrick O'Brian novels, it was a terrific movie. We will see a second, third, fourth, etc Aubrey/Maturin movie. Each movie will also increase sales of O'Brians's books.
The (somewhat similar) Horatio Hornblower movies were quite good and seemed to have a following. IMHO, the books were nowhere near as good as O'Brian's.

You are not alone. Critics ripped into the latest Transformers movie (no surprise) and it quickly made into record-breaking territory.
Critics want to be Important so they sniff at movies that are just a lot of fun and crowd pleasers.
Yeah, I’d see it anyway. I like naval movies!
Actually you are guessing correctly IMO. I liked the original.
I recently got the latest remastered Final Cut version that came out a couple years ago. The small changes that Scott made, even in regards to the Directors Cut made it a completely different movie, very subtle but fantastic too.

I just added it to my Netflix queue — I’ll take your word that it is worth another look.
:)
That is good news. I’ve seen very few movies since that one came out that I really went out of my way to see...or wanted to.
You’ll be amazed. Let me know what you think.
I concur. The books were excellent and I loved the series on...what, HBO?
Oh, I’m so happy! What a great piece of news to start the day. This is fantastic. Crowe ought to be legally compelled to make movies of all the books in the series and then some more.
This must be the one where the “Crew gets Gay”.....I don’t recall seeing a woman in the first film....
Loved the story line in the film but not too crazy about Crowe. Something about his screen presence just bothers me. Think it is a undercurrent of arrogance. Just me I guess.
If you haven’t seen the first movie, you can watch it on-line over at Hulu.com.
I thought it was a great movie myself. The end of the battle moved me to tears.
I’d pay money to see it.
As for Russel Crowe....South Park did him best.
