Coyote Invasion Feared in Long Beach After Cats Disappear

Several cats have suddenly gone missing in one north Long Beach neighborhood and its feared coyotes may be to blame.

Lisa Kamieniecki says she watched a coyote kill her 14-year-old cat named "Bear" around 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

The coyote dropped the cat's body when her husband scared it off, Kamieniecki said.

She says two coyotes returned minutes later.

Kamieniecki called Animal Control, who told her that coyotes commonly feed at that time. But, if the animals make a daytime appearance or don't seem to fear humans or cars, that's something Animal Control would investigate, according to John Keisler, Manager of Animal Care Services in Long Beach.

Kamieniecki says she's surprised to see coyotes in such a populated area. She also feels that her cat was not the first family pet to be attacked.

She says she's noticed a number of "Missing Cat" signs in the neighborhood, and thinks the coyotes may be responsible for the disappearances.

She now fears that small children may fall prey to the hungry coyotes.

Keisler says this is the start of the wildlife season. He advises residents to bring small dogs and cats inside for the night and only walk them during the daytime. He also suggests removing sources of food, water and shelter to avoid attracting coyotes.

Coyotes are not to blame. The irresponsible cat owners are to blame.

I advise anyone who is able in the area to go coyote hunting and put the fear of man into these little wolves.

Cats are responsible for whiping out and decimating many species here in the US, I say rock on Coyotes, there are way to many cats here in the US and the coyotes are just keeping them in check, keep you kitties in doors if you’re worried about it, but, be sure do de-worm them well, 1 in 10 Americans (higher actually) are infected with the worms their cats carry.

Oh you mean the cat owners who are letting their cats out at night are crying because a better predator is eating their cats.

The cats that leave their droppings on their neighbors patio. Or tear up their plants.

Here in Illinois it’s coyote season pretty much all year round. I hate those things. They are vicious little bastards. I have shot a few in my lifetime.

The only way this poster can think of, coyotes might be getting there is via the “river” - a massive mostly dry concrete culvert which slices through the urban landscape north to south through Northern Long Beach - ending by the ocean in Long Beach.

The coyotes must have walked down from way north somewhere, and then scrambled out at one of the exit ramps.

Series, gang bangers are a way bigger threat in that neighborhood, than any wild animals.

In CA the season is pretty much year round also, they are sneaky and will attack children if hungry enough. As for people being surprised at them being in Long Beach, coyotes will live where ever they can find food.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for people who allow their cats to roam outside.

We have a coyote problem here in Houston...within the city limits in small areas of woods in areas like The Heights right next to I-10. Like raccoons, opossums and armadillos, they are adaptable and resourceful critters. Couple of dogs have been carried off by them and an occassional jogger has been hurried along their way by them.
