Yesterday, I had a woodpecker on my suet bar, that I had never seen before. He had what appeared to be very large, red hat on the very top of his head.
So, I did a little search, to see if I could find out what kind he was - and there appears to be several woodpeckers with red “hats”. (Yellow crowned, red bellied, zebra backed, ladder backed, gila, etc.) Any ideas?
BTW - great pictures! Thank you for sharing!

The Downy Woodpeckers in my photos look just like Hairy Woodpeckers but are a couple of inches shorter (7 1/2" compared to 5 1/2" according to the book) The ladderbacks are much lighter and have a yellowish tinge to them...thern, of course, there is the Red-Headed...

The red was only on the very top of his head, and was very bright red (like a hat).....
I have lived in this part of the country (high desert, AZ) for many years, and have never seen anything like it.
I feed over 200 goldfinches every day, and a miriad of other birds. There have been many woodpeckers, but this one was “new”.
Thank you for your information!
