The Downy Woodpeckers in my photos look just like Hairy Woodpeckers but are a couple of inches shorter (7 1/2" compared to 5 1/2" according to the book) The ladderbacks are much lighter and have a yellowish tinge to them...thern, of course, there is the Red-Headed...

The red was only on the very top of his head, and was very bright red (like a hat).....

I have lived in this part of the country (high desert, AZ) for many years, and have never seen anything like it.

I feed over 200 goldfinches every day, and a miriad of other birds. There have been many woodpeckers, but this one was “new”.
