The red was only on the very top of his head, and was very bright red (like a hat).....

I have lived in this part of the country (high desert, AZ) for many years, and have never seen anything like it.

I feed over 200 goldfinches every day, and a miriad of other birds. There have been many woodpeckers, but this one was “new”.

I am in Wisconsin the following are goldfinches in their drabber winter plumage...they are returning to bright yellow as we speak)

the gila and roadrunner are from journeys south and west. I'd love to photograph a Phainopepla or Vermilion Flycatcher.
