Yesterday, I had a woodpecker on my suet bar, that I had never seen before. He had what appeared to be very large, red hat on the very top of his head.

So, I did a little search, to see if I could find out what kind he was - and there appears to be several woodpeckers with red “hats”. (Yellow crowned, red bellied, zebra backed, ladder backed, gila, etc.) Any ideas?

The Downy Woodpeckers in my photos look just like Hairy Woodpeckers but are a couple of inches shorter (7 1/2" compared to 5 1/2" according to the book) The ladderbacks are much lighter and have a yellowish tinge to them...thern, of course, there is the Red-Headed...
