In 1925 a Tennessee teacher of biology named Thomas Scopes was tried for teaching the theory of evolution. An expert witness at the trial relates how evolution lost in court but won in the eyes of the nation

A brilliant and noteworthy update of Darwin’s “Origin” can be found in Steve Jones’ “Darwin’s Ghost.”
From the book’s back cover ...
“Jones is a writer of engaging wit and dazzling erudition and has been called “the British Carl Sagan.” Using modern examples — the AIDS virus, the puzzles of sexual selection, the physiology of pets, and the unparalleled genetic success of our own species — he shows the power and immediacy of Darwin’s great argument and allows us to appreciate how it makes life make sense. Eye-opening and entertaining, filled with astonishing facts, amusing anectdotes, and the very latest research, Darwin’s Ghost is contemporary sciencewriting at its very best.”
Ok everyone,,, expand your mind for one minute. I had realization. Forget the evolution debate for just one minute.
The true *central* issue in the Scopes trial was whether a teacher could be free to teach what they believed to be true, without restriction by law. The left championed Scopes being free to teach evolution, according to his belief that it was true science. They said it was wrong to compel him to teach something he didnt believe was true. They ridiculed the people who said Scopes should be arrested for teaching evolution. Bring on the free debate of ideas, they said.
Fast forward to today; the friends of Scopes have flipped sides in the Scopes trial. They now argue that a teacher must teach the state orthodoxy of evolution, and must NOT follow his conscience. Debate as to the merits of the theory are no longer welcome. Follow the edicts of the state.
When anyone brings up the scopes trial,, don’t fall into the debate over evolution,, just ask the modern liberal if they feel Scopes should have been free to follow his conscience,,
They are sure to say yes,,
then *Bada bing*,, spring your trap and watch ‘em pop a critical vessel.
In 1925....
I was a little confused. 1925 wasn't 50 years ago. Then there's this:
Editor's Note: This story, originally published in the January 1959 issue of Scientific American is being posted as a supplement to the "50, 100, 150 Years Ago" Column in the January 2009 issue of Scientific American.
Evolutionist always have to fudge the math.
I guess what im saying, is that if the defenders of Scopes followed the line of same defense today, they would be be defending todays teachers who want to be free to critically examine the flaws in evolution theory.
They are now the ones being disciplined and fired for daring to test and critically examine the official theory!
The hypocrisy is stunning!
-John Washington Butler
The textbook that Scopes used in class was George Hunter's Civic Biology, written with the help of eugenist Herbert Walter. Here are some quotes from the book:
"...anatomically there is a greater difference between the lowest type of monkey and the highest type of ape than there is between the highest type of ape and the lowest savage..." -- pg.195"[Mongolians, Negroes, and the] highest type of all, the Caucasians, represented by the civilized white inhabitants of Europe and America." pg. 193-196.
""Useless Eaters"... "Hundreds of families such as those described above [Jukes, Kallikaks etc.] exist to-day, spreading disease, immorality, and crime to all parts of this country. The cost to society of such families are very severe. They not only do harm to others by corrupting, stealing, or spreading disease, but they are actually protected and cared for by the state out of public money... They take from society, but give nothing in return. They are true parasites. If such people were lower animals, we would probably kill them off to prevent them from spreading..." -- pg.263
