SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29, 2008 - For the first time, researchers have established a clear link between family rejection of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adolescents and negative health outcomes in early adulthood. The findings will be published in the January issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, in a peer-reviewed article entitled "Family Rejection as a Predictor of Negative Health Outcomes in White and Latino Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Young Adults."

So many clever innuendos I could use in response, and yet, I think I like my FR membership, so they will remain forever a secret. ;)
While I certainly hope that you wouldn’t off yourself if things got that bad (had family member do it, so have to insert that comment), I do admire your respect and love for your family. It’s a rare thing these days.
Could you have the title corrected? From the excerpt it appears that the poor health is during early adulthood, not early childhood, and is a result of, not a precursor to, recognition of purported same-sex attraction.
Okay, I see that the bad title comes from the linked article—an astounding error. But can a parenthetical correction be added? It’s rather confusing as it stands.
Parents should note just how left-wing and anti-Christian pediatric groups have become.
I take it that Eureka Alert is a gay publication? If so, the fact that they can’t write a headline that reflects the content of the article may be telling.
Well...OBVIOUSLY ..the rearing of such sensitives in a traditional family setting is a violation of their civil rights....
Love your kid. Persistent, patient love - may take 20 or even 40 years to yield results, but it's the thing to try (I think)
PS - my kids are only 7 and 3, so what do I know?
I never insinuated that rejection of LGBT means rejection of the loved one - only the lifestyle.
I still assert Dr. Ryan has an axe to grind - she is all over the web and academia with her studies of LGBTism and health. It, frankly, doesn't pass the smell test - she has a vested interest.
“I take it that Eureka Alert is a gay publication? If so, the fact that they cant write a headline that reflects the content of the article may be telling.”
Um, all it takes to see what the main site is about is to go to the main page (eurkealert.org). Eureka Alert is a science site, not a homosexual site.
Oh, and I agree with you that the early childhood bit makes no sense. That bugged me too.
I'm not surprised that rejection by family would cause depression and lead to destructive behaviors. But given the description above I wonder about methodology.
There are not that many participants in the study, and it sounds like those participants were self-selecting, not random (the word "recruited" is a giveaway).
Given the nature of the organization doing the survey, it is likely the kids knew the organization expected them to blame their parents for their problems. So it isn't surprising that those who had problems would say they were "rejected".
The write-up doesn't say, and therefore I presume it the case, that they did NOT do any interviews with the families of the kids to see if there was any indication of "rejection".
I also would love to see the actual criteria for rating "rejection" that the study says they "developed" over several years of previous interviews.
I wonder if a parent simply forbidding the kid to bring a gay friend into the house would be considered "rejection".
Lastly, I would note that the study, by looking at active homosexuals (again we can infer this because the kids were recruited from gay venues).
So the study will only include kids who were NOT HELPED by the family actions. What if we found out that 20% of the kids who thought they might be gay were "straightened out" by whatever "rejection" was given by parents, while 10% of those who clearly were not gay but just confused ended up in the gay lifestyle because the parents were too "accepting".
If so, given the much higher rate of depression, suicide, HIV, and other medical problems in GENERAL which plague the gay community, it could well be that "rejection", while bad for those who don't respond, actually reduced the problems among the entire population of "supposedly gay kids to come out to their parents".
It's like a study of "abstinence" which only interviews pregnant girls and asks how many took pledges.
IF my child claimed to be gay, I’d take a multi-pronged approach.
I would get them to a counselor who didn’t buy into the “gay is genetic” thing.
I would be certain to let them know I loved them no matter what.
I would provide them with all the statistics on how harmful a gay lifestyle is.
I would point out that all of us have things that are part of our “nature” that are destructive, and that we don’t have to give into our destructive urges. I would note that being “in love” in the manner we are taught by the movies is an unhealthy concept, that true love can be nurtured and formed, and that attraction and caring is stronger as a learned response than as a base biochemical reaction.
In other words, arranged marriages worked because people didn’t expect to be head-over-heals at first glance. Instead, they knew what was expected, and over time developed a true love and respect that wasn’t based on superficial and changeable qualities.
Would it be dissappointing to not be able to have a relationship with a person you have “animal attraction” to? Sure. But don’t most of us heterosexual men (and I imagine a lot of women as well) deal with that dissappointment every time we turn on the TV?

“I wonder if a parent simply forbidding the kid to bring a gay friend into the house would be considered “rejection”.”
Would letting a gay kid into the house be that bad? I mean, if you’re leaving the two alone in a room, then sure, something could happen, but shouldn’t parents be supervising their kids anyways?
If your child for whatever reason still said he was gay after all that, then what would you do?
I did not have time to do that. I went to the article but not the home page. If it’s a science site, then why in the world did they put “early childhood” into the headline? I can understand a science site’s interest in the study about health problems in early adulthood but a number of the commmentators were obviously gay, reading the article as confirmation of the terrible harm done to them by those who reject them. That’s why I thought it might be a gay site.
But science writers could at least write an accurate headline, one would think.
As I see it, that's a sad statement to make. Everything I know about homosexuality and root causes tells me nobody has to turn out gay. There's no science behind the born that way theory and with prominent gays leaving the lifestyle who are helping others leave the lifestyle as well, we need to be very careful in what we say to young men and women in regards to sexuality.
The more I look at studies on homosexuality, the more I see more of the same methods.
We need to do more research.
Gay Men, Straight Women Have Similar Brains
Most of the gays that have 'left' the 'lifestyle' usually return or worse (commit suicide, for example).
