When your dog says "Woof," you hear an eager, "Let's take a walk." And your cat has a certain entitled meow that you know means, "Put more food in my bowl now!" You are not alone. Sixty-seven percent of pet owners say they understand their animals' barks, purrs and other sounds, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll released Wednesday. In a finding many parents of teenagers might envy, 62 percent of owners say that when they speak their pets get the message.

I understand my dog alot better than I understand my nearly two year old...
My mother had a dog. In order to get his treat, he had to stand up, turn around in a circle and sit.
Do you want a treat? Dog stands up, turns around and sits.
She was watching my brothers pet bird. She was talking to the bird whose name was “cheep”. “Hi cheep, that’s a good cheep, can you say cheep”. She notices the dog staring intently at cheep. She turns to the dog and says “do you want cheep”. He stands up, turns around and sits down. Yes! He wants Cheep!
May just be the inflection in her voice?
My pets never had a problem communicating. They also let me know I was fortunate to live with them, heh.<<<
But you are.....LOL, Sounds like mine always were.
My blonde cocker does that. Only she pokes me. If I ignore her then she'll do a "rooo rooo rooo" and poke me again. She's a funny girl!
Dad says when the dog can get him a beer then it’s a true dog ...
She very well could be. Our little guy is supposed to be half pom and half chihuahua, but we sure don't see much pom in him, except he has a stockier build than an chihuahua. I've seen other "Pomchis" that end up with the long pom fur and the big chihuahua ears. You just don't get any kind of standard when you mix breeds like that, but I swear by mix breeds. They are usually much healthier than purebred dogs that end up with problems bred into their breed.
You've got a cute one there, whatever she is. She looks like a good little dog. :-)
Ah. Here's the gif I wanted to post to you...
No doubt about that. My kitties are big talkers when they demand that their human put breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks on the table. And even more vocal when there is inclement weather (they are outside kitties). They seem to think I can make it quit raining.
I understand “pup” speak really well. The Labs/Lab mixes I have had in the past and today are very eloquent speakers.
Gads Nully, that’s the ugliest thing I ever saw, lolol.
Please don’t tell me it’s your cat! I ‘think’ it’s a cat...could be a lemur!!
Thanks Joe. I’ve missed a lot of pings recently but wanted to bookmark this one.
Amazing what our dogs ‘learn to tell us’!!
I love it!
Indeed. When I was young, we had a widowed neighbor who had a cute little Boston Terrier that was her pride and joy. If the dog had been human, he could have made a killing on insurance fraud...that dog could fake an injury with Oscar winning performances. I suspect when he was very young, she must have accidentally stepped on him or something that made him yelp, then coddled and treated him to no end. The dog quickly learned that faking or exaggerating a limp and/or whining was going to get him doted upon even more than usual...
My cat Crookedtail is like that. He looks out the opened door and sees the rain, then backs up and runs to another exit, thinking I suppose that it won’t raining out that door! I know, dumb cat. But he can ask for milk by name ‘meilllk’.
Amazing story and I believe it, lol. I read long ago that a dog has the intelligence of a two year old human child.
As the mother of 4 I know that by the age of two a child has a pretty good vocabulary and “knows” how to do a lot of things. Dogs can’t talk but they show us in many ways.
From an earlier thread about dogs showing their unhappiness or displeasure, I also know that to be true. My Yorkie will pout, just flop down with his head between his front paws and stare into space, lol.
LOL what did you write to get post #1 removed?
anyways, every cat i’ve ever had, had a particular, and loud, verbal sound they made when they thought their litter box was too dirty.
It was quite different from “feed me” or “love me”.
:-)
