When your dog says "Woof," you hear an eager, "Let's take a walk." And your cat has a certain entitled meow that you know means, "Put more food in my bowl now!" You are not alone. Sixty-seven percent of pet owners say they understand their animals' barks, purrs and other sounds, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll released Wednesday. In a finding many parents of teenagers might envy, 62 percent of owners say that when they speak their pets get the message.

If, by some chance, I don’t understand my cat when he mews for food, by Jove he’ll repeat himself until he’s understood.

My cat has a cute way of telling me that guests have arrived. It’s kind of a panicked chirp, with big eyes.

My last kitty had a "whisper meow" she would use at night when she wanted to get in bed with me. It was very cute.
Wish current cats would adopt practice!

I have a Border Collie - she is so intelligent you could almost have coherent conversations with her. She'll sit up which tells me she wants something. I'll tell her to 'show me' and she'll run over to whatever it is she wants ...scary.

Dog owners prevail over cat people when it comes to claims of successfully speaking to their animals: Three in 10 dog owners think their pets are baffled when they speak to them, compared with nearly half of cat owners who say the same. Cats understand humans just fine. Don't confuse not knowing with not caring.

I have talked to my little Pomeranian/Chihuahua, Chachi, as if he were a little kid since he was a puppy. He understands most of what I say and I have learned to understand him too. I don't think there is anything unusual about this, but even my vet seems skeptical that he knows the names of most of his toys. But he does. They are capable of much more than we give them credit for.
He's my baby and there will be lots of cool stuff from Santa under this little guy's tree!

My wife and I started to spell certain words around our dog, such as “walk” and “cookie”. He caught onto that real quick and now, we’ll just use the first letter, but speak it softly because as soon as he hears the “w” in “walk”, his ears perk up. All he has to do is look at me in certain ways and I know if he wants out or if he needs to eat.
