Indonesia May Face a "Supercycle" of Devastating Earthquakes

scientists are warning that several other major earthquakes are likely to occur in the region over the next decades. A new study examined the growth records of coral reefs off the coast of Sumatra, and say they show evidence of repeated bursts of earthquakes that relieve pressure on the Sunda fault. A shock in 2007 may be the beginning of a new cycle, researchers say. Says study coauthor Kerry Sieh: "If previous cycles are a reliable guide we can expect one or more very large west Sumatran earthquakes … within the next two decades" [Reuters]. As if to illustrate the point that the Indian Ocean is seismically active, reports are coming in that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck last night off the coast of Sumatra... In the study, published in Science [subscription required], researchers looked at the growth patterns of coral reefs in the region over the past 700 years. When a quake occurs the seafloor rises up, effectively lowering the sea level so that shallow coral reefs are now above the surface. The reefs can't grow upward, but their still submerged portions grow outward [The New York Times]. Researchers found evidence of this growth pattern about every 200 years, and say the changes to the coral reefs in the region weren't caused by one single giant earthquake.

Reminds me of when all us kids in 3rd grade showed up with bathing suits on under our cloths because the whole state was going to break off and fall into the ocean.

This too will be blamed on global warming and SUVs.

Well obviously — earthquakes are caused by global warming, and everyone knows, Bush has RAPED Mother EARTH. ;’)

Another possibility is mega volcanos. Given the 200 year framework, we have the giant Tambora volcano in 1815 which caused “the year with no summer” in New England in 1816. I also worry about the New Madrid fault(s) which also may be on a 200 year cycle. The mega earthquakes of 1811-1812 would cause unbelievable devastation in the midwest if they were to recur. If I lived in St. Louis and points south I would definately have an earthquake plan in effect with my family.

One of my favorite SF short stories involves a geologist making a breakthrough, and prediciting exactly WHEN ‘California would break off & fall into the sea’.

People headed east, and then just before the big event, he makes the announcement that he was wrong, and California wasn’t going to drown after all.

Pressed by reporters, he told them, as he stepped back to the WEST side of the fault, “oh, no the quake will happen; I just got a sign wrong in the equations. California will remain; the REST of the country will sink!”

Iirc, it was Jane Dixon with the help of idiotarians in the msm broadcasting and popularizing her “predictions”.

Ah, a “psychic”.

Miss Cleo did just as good of a job with her “predictions”.

Remember her?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3ABE3wvxzA

She kind of looks like our lovely Michele Obama in native dress.

Amazing how gullible and stupid people are:

“1990s and early 2000s. She reportedly earned $13.5 million in this capacity.[2] Harris currently offers private psychic consultations and other services through Wahgwaan Entertainment, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Cleo

It turns out she was a fraud )big surprise - LOL) and had legal issues as well as emotional issues - she was a lesbian.
