[me] The price of crude will not fall below $80 a barrel, and if there is any major political, military, or paramilitary shock, crude may hit $125 a barrel.

Due to a continued devaluation of the US dollar, a continued flood of foreign cash will continue to finance gov’t deficits. If the interest rate rises as a result of gov’t deficits, a continued flood of foreign cash will continue to finance gov’t deficits.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, a continued flood of foreign cash will continue to finance US gov’t deficits.

The Dhimmicrats’ move to Alternative Minimum Tax relief will be the only income tax relief we’re going to see in 2007 and 2008.

My pleasure. I've got a prediction -- the Detroit Lions won't win a game this season. Their four remaining opponents are Vikings, Colts, Saints, and Packers, half the games are on the road.

Banking / Currency:
  1. The value of the dollar will continue basically higher all year, provided crude prices remain low.
  2. Commodity prices will decline all year.
  3. Retail food prices will come down all year.
Aerospace:
  1. NASA's budget will be cut in order to keep the desk jockeys and paperwork junkies instead of human spaceflight. Prospects for human spaceflight after retirement of the Shuttle will continue to be a matter for "study".
  2. Boeing will lay off employees, Airbus will continue to be plagued with problems.
Transportation:
  1. Air travel in the US will increase as the number of airlines decreases, provided crude prices remain low.
  2. The price of crude will remain below $60 a barrel throughout 2009.
  3. Ethanol subsidies will continue, much to the chagrin of many FReepers (not this one).
  4. There will be no automobile company bailout.
Government:
  1. Obama's cabinet will come to resemble Israel's.
  2. Obama vs. Pelosi and Reid will be the hot fight card in D.C.
  3. There will be one new Supreme Court justice in 2009.
  4. There will be attempts by the Obama administration to harm the coal industry and agriculture.
War on Terror:
  1. Obama plans to leave Gates as Sec'y of Defense, and to follow President Bush' lead by using surge tactics in Afghanistan. He will succeed in both, only because (and if) he succeeds with the first one.
  2. Obama vs. Reid and Pelosi will mostly not involve the US presence in Iraq.
  3. Obama's first foray into foreign intervention (as author) will be in Zimbabwe; the second will be in Somalia and Somaliland; the third will be in Sudan; the fourth will be in Nigeria. The level of Obama's preferred US intervention will decline as he goes down this list of four. Only the first one (Zimb) will work out.
  4. Because of the cratering of crude prices, there will be more short wars of aggression by Russia for its interests in the area of the state monopoly on hydrocarbon production. Because Iraq is no longer run by Saddam Hussein, the likelihood of an inter-OPEC war for production market share has been reduced, but political instability due to its brewing budget crisis will finally result in a civil war or major insurrection in Saudi Arabia.
  5. Venezuela will have the same problem and will not be able to buy the advanced fighters from Russia. Chavez' latest proposal to amend the Venezuelan constitution to extend his dictatorship in all but name will fail. Columbia's enemies in the US Congress will succeed in stymying efforts to help it financially, much to the delight of various coke-heads who call themselves conservatives.
  6. North Korea will try to test a nuclear bomb, but the attempt will fail. Rumors about Kim Jong-il will continue, this time claiming he's been removed from day to day decisions governing the illegal Pyongyang regime.
  7. Pakistan will launch yet another internal security operation, and this time will succeed in re-establishing control over one or more of its rebellious provinces. Members of the European Union will condemn supposed human rights violations committed by Pakistan during the operation.
Diplomacy:
  1. Compliant with the aims of President Obama, Sec'y of State Hillary Clinton will be a hawk regarding US relations with Russia, to combat what is perceived as declining US influence over and support from various political entities of Central Asia, one of which is Pakistan. As a consequence, India will de facto be thrown under the bus.
  2. India will host an Asian superpower summit which will include high officials of both China and Russia.
  3. Israel will be surprisingly well treated under the Obama administration, much to the chagrin of his fellow Moslems.
  4. As a consequence of the cratering of crude oil prices, Iran has less money coming in, but has less going out because it no longer has to pay the big bucks to import gasoline (it has no refineries). At some point there will be more violence in the upper political echelon of Iran. The diplomatic approach of isolation and containment used by the US against Iran will continue. There will be no nuclear weapon test by Iran in 2009.
Books and the Arts:
  1. Virtually every title in the "urban myths" and "debunking" and "lies your teacher told you" genre will wind up on the cold hard slab of marble that is the remainder table (and good riddance).
  2. Windfall profits taxes on overpaid Hollywood stars and television celebrities will be proposed (by me, right now, that's one correct prediction so far).
  3. Hollywood will continue to suck, as will daytime TV.
  4. Digital broadcast TV, which begins in February, will contribute to further declines in the dish and cable business.
  5. Broadband will be installed in a former portajohn (has been someone's "home" for some time now) under the freeway onramp, marking the end of the first phase of broadband buildout in the US.
  6. There will be Congressional hearings on the epidemic of movie piracy (including bootlegs shot off theater screens, which are sold to undiscerning criminals who apparently never watch the lousy things). Even more stupid anti-piracy measures are suggested by "witnesses" like George Clooney.
that oughta do it for a few days. :')

In terms of election 2006, note that the prediction markets nailed it, that we would be losing both the house & senate, whereas only about 8% of Freepers saw it coming.

I suppose if there are to be predictions for 2009, Intrade would be the place to go. As a followup, note that Intrade nailed the 2008 election, they were correct on 48/50 states.

Intrade got 48/50 by my count, reversing IN and MO. On election eve, the market predicted narrowly for McCain in Indiana and Obama in MO. But the electoral count was still right, because both states have 11 EVs.

Not yet. But I’m trying.

https://bb.intrade.com/intradeForum/posts/list/3172.page

I recently came to realize why Intrade is likely not to be interested in posting this kind of contract. Intrade recently blocked a forum on the general discussions page that talked about Tradesports shutting down. John Remington wrote that Intrade is probably “strategically positioning itself to formally re-enter the US market. “ That means they need to deal with the commissions appointed by the new Obama administration. Having a contract that bets on Obama’s political damage or demise is going to hurt Intrade’s chances of getting back in.

Note that the most read thread on their forum is my CertifiGate thread.

OK, I guess I'll try.

1. Having gone through 128,352,956 names in her little black book, Paris Hilton will finally come to mine. She will then join a convent.

2. The Mariners will not win the World Series.

3. Pinch Sulzberger will go back into the closet, where he will encounter Tom Cruise, Prince, and Richard Gere's gerbil. The three of them will sue the state of California to recognize their marriage.

4. Joe Biden will take the oath to be Vice President of Zanzibar. The media will blame Bush.

5. Michael Jackson will start acting a little weird.

6. Oil will end the year at $85 a barrel, Regular gasoline in my state will be selling for $2.90 a gallon. I will be able to afford to run my lawn mower. To work.

7. FR will still rock.
