National/Political:

President Obama will not hold the office for the entire year.Unclear as to what his fate is.
Michael Jackson will get a sex change operation — to become a man.
The question is, how many people do you know? And are they evenly spread throughout the country? I posit that even one in 5,000 adult citizens, or about 36,000, who are relatively unknown outside their immediate circle of family and friends, will go unnoticed in the population at large; certainly so outside their home cities or states.
The total could go very high, perhaps to 100K (one in 1800), before the magnitude of it becomes apparent to the population at large, at least a third of whom would react with "good riddance".
It's not outside the realm of possibility. Remember that Ayers et. al. contemplated "eliminating" (killing) 25M "hard-core capitalists".
Okay, I’ll try my hand at this:
SCOTUS will find Zero is not constitutionally qualified to take the office of President, due to his status as a foreign national. Although the MSM will report the story, nothing will happen because of a combination of massive apathy and fear of reprisal from the inner-city black population.
A nuclear device will be detonated in an act of agression/war somewhere in the world within the first 3 months of 2009. Likeliest candidates: India/Pakistan
An American landmark, not necessarily a national monument, will be attacked by terrorists. Candidates: Sears Tower (Chicago), Transamerica Tower (San Fran), Space Needle (Seattle)
Joe Biden will resign due to a long-standing alcohol problem. New VP will be either Bill Richardson, Howard Dean, or Nancy Peolsi.
Two Supreme Court Justices will either die/resign due to health.
A famous Hollywood star who no one would think would do such a thing will die of an overdose of illegal drugs.
Use of the “F-word” will start to be more frequent on broadcast TV. Christians and family groups will protest, but no one will do anything.
An openly homosexual person will shoot and kill a nationally-known religious figure. This will likely happen in California.
Major earthquake (7.5+) on the West Coast.
Dow falls to 5000 by the end of the year. Suicides will be seen on Wall St.
Scientists will attempt to clone a wooly mammoth. They will succeed. They will also attempt (likely in Europe) to create a human-ape hybrid. They will fail.
The big supercollider in Europe will re-fire about mid-year. Zilch will be discovered.
A Cabinet-level person will be cause engaging in an intimate act with an animal. (Just threw that one in for good measure)
Dead Pool: Ted Kennedy (gimme), Patrick Swayze (ditto), Margaret Thatcher (ditto, and sad), Amy Winehouse (coke OD), Ed McMahon, Jerry Lewis (!), Billy Graham, Leonard Nimoy (after new ST film comes out, and not because of it)
Ayers numbers were for 30 years ago, it would be higher now.
My guess is they will send people to re-education camps. Those who refuse to go or cause trouble at the camps will be sent home and never seen again.
So to survive one must resist at the onset to re-education.
But when I consider how Americans are today most will just allow themselves to be brainwashed. and except family no one will care that people are missing.
I recently heard that several states are trying ro pass a law that requires ammo have a shelf life of about one year. This of course will deter stockpiling.

Don't worry about it. Zimbabwe's in free fall. There may be some other flyspeck country with something similar (if less severe). No one else. Any country (typically, industrialized country, or major developing country such as India or China) which relies on imported petroleum (pretty much all of 'em) will see a major turnaround in 2009, because crude has dropped almost 70 per cent of its peak price. There will be noticeable drops in all commodities, other than the panic-money precious metals and such -- and those will not hold their value. By the election campaign of 2012, Obama will be taking credit for the boom that is going on at that time, the US gov't current deficit will be much smaller, tax revenues will be up (with or without a continuation of the Bush tax cuts), and the first of the postwar boom babies will be 65 in 2011, and not worried too much about their Social Security. *
