"Screaming Mummy" Is Murderous Son of Ramses III?

found in 1886 and now located in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo... [c]alled both "Unknown Man E" and the "Screaming Mummy" because of his open jaw and agonized expression, the mummy has baffled researchers since it was first uncovered. Several archaeologists have proposed theories about the mummy's cause of death, saying he might have been buried alive or poisoned, or that he was a murdered Hittite prince during the reign of Tutankhamen. Archaeologists now agree, however, that mummies are commonly found with their jaws open as a result of their heads falling back after death... The theory about poison, on the other hand, has not been totally ruled out... Papyrus documents indicate a trial that took place in the 12th century B.C. for a wife of Pharaoh Ramses III. She was charged with conspiracy to murder the pharoah and put her son Pentewere in his place.

An Egyptian mummy preserved with a pained facial expression (above) could be Prince Pentewere, suspected of plotting the murder of his father, Pharaoh Ramses III, according to a new analysis. Recent examinations of the mummy, found in 1886 and now located in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, have helped archaeologists piece together a story of attempted murder, suicide, and conspiracy. There was a popular paperback book published a while back, The Hiram Key by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas, that speculated on the origin of this mummy, amongst other things, and promising tantalizing insights into the secret world of the Freemasons.

As I recall, their speculation was that the person mummified in this manner was one of the three Juwes who murdered Hiram Abiff, and that this murder happened not in the Temple of Solomon, but at a much earlier date, in Egypt. And that the mummy was screaming because he had just had his bollix sliced off as a punishment before being mummified alive (apparently, the mummy is actually minus his bollix, and the wound happened just before death).

The book goes on to make further leaps, drawing wild conclusions based upon creeping speculation. You can read more about it here.

Yes, I have a copy in my Masonic library, yes it was written by a pair of Freemasons, yes I have read it and yes I too am a Freemason. But no, I do not believe everything that other Freemasons have speculated upon. Few Freemasons do, and this would be an excellent example of one such work I take with a huge grain of salt.

In this particular case, the only thing that I can really agree with the authors on is that Freemasonry is an Antient brotherhood that has existed for many, many centuries.

May it long be thus, and may God preserve The Craft.

Diehard, isn’t being a Mason supposed to be a secret? Or was that just back in the old days?

No, it’s never been a secret, although historically many Masons have kept their involvement to themselves. I think their rational was that “if they don’t know that I’m a Mason I won’t be asked to divulge any Masonic Secrets...”

In Lodge, Masons do things and say things and know things that are Secret, and that we have sworn to keep Secret. No Mason will ever tell those Secrets to a non-Mason.

But our membership to The Brotherhood is not necessarily secret: it is up to the individual Brother to decide whether he tells anyone. In my case, I choose to have my membership known.

> Whence came you, brother?

From a L. of the H. S. J. of J.

(I had to look that answer up in an American ritual book, because we do a slightly different version of the First Degree here in NZ. I think I like your version better.

Never been to J. before, but one day I hope to go. So much history to see...)
