Hi fellow Freepers. I did a search and did not find this topic. If you know of a previous post, please redirect.
I've been hogging our Netflix (history, documentary, military genres) and realize the wife and kids need some levity.
Would you all take the time and give me an opinion of what you consider to be the best funny movies you've seen. I'm talking from the silent era of Charlie Chaplin up to the most present ala American Carol.
It doesn't matter if it's dark humor to vulgar humor to Walt Disney. Thanks for your input!
That’s a fact, Jack.
Although its not completely family friendly, its tame by todayss standards. Great sight gags, an excelent cast (Brooks, Dom DeLuise, Marty Feldman, Bernadette Peters, cameos by many famous actors), and the only word actually spoken in the whole film...is by the late Marcel Marceau.”
I second your choice. Paul Neuman has a great part. Lot's of sight gags.
And it's a TRUE story about Mel's comeback from alcoholism.
The Party is another great Peter Sellers film.
I thought The Gods Must be Crazy funny too
Another obscure movie that I thought really funny
was that Lucy and Desi movie “Big Long Trailer” its
hilarious
The Long, Long Trailer.
Filled with rocks....
Netflix reference bump ... I could use a good laugh! ;-)
Honey, do you think KFC is still open?
Priceless.
And Lucy trying to fix a meal in the
trailer going down the road
Desi destroying that house trying to park the trailer
Funny movie
I see a lot of the classics (Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, etc.) have already been mentioned, so I’ll try to supply a few less common ideas.
Top Secret (young Val Kilmer actually sings; same creators as Airplane!)
Zoolander (”Obey my dog!”)
Mystery Men (misfit third-rate superheroes)
The Man Who Knew Too Little (Bill Murray gets mixed up in a spy caper and doesn’t realize it)
In addition, I’ll recommend DVDs of two TV series: Futurama and Blackadder (particularly incarnations II through IV). MST3K is not a bad option, either.
“Any Laurel and Hardy from the 20s.”.....
Sons of the Desert.....when Hardy’s wife starts unloading all the cabinets of plates and Hardy says: “But Sugar, you don’t have to leave tonight”. In a few scenes later, he is sitting in the middle of the living room with a pot on his head for protection while his wife zings everything but the kitchen sink at him......
Chuckle ;-)
The Groove Tube
Young Frankenstein
Raising Arizona
Stripes
Whats Up Tiger Lily?
A Shot in the Dark
The Party
Well...All of these have been listed, but.. my TOP 5 is:
1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
Look, that rabbit’s got a vicious streak a mile wide! It’s a killer!”—Tim the Enchanter (John Cleese)
2) Wedding Crashers!!!!!
3) Caddyshack
4) The Jerk
5) Little Big Man
“I’m a BIG man here... I have a wife and four horses!”
“Really?? I have a horse, and four wives!”
A couple of others that I haven’t seen listed as often:
When Harry met Sally...
Napoleon Dynamite
Beverly Hills Cop
The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy Version)
And.. definitely, in the ‘Classic’ lineup:
A Philadelphia Story
Some Like it Hot
The Cheyenne Social Club
I liked the part where they were on that long and laborious upgrade pulling the trailer with the Mercury they left with and in the next outside shot at a sharp curve, the Mercury turns into a Lincoln (more power).
"Korea? The Lord sent me a travelin' man."
What’s up Tiger Lilly.
1. Blazing Saddles
2. Monty Python & the Holy Grail
3. Airplane!
4. Monty Python’s Life of Brian
5. Ghostbusters
6. Young Frankenstein
7. Tarzoon, Shame of the Jungle (a cheaply made, vulgar animation that quickly disappeared from view due to a mentally impaired Johnny Weismuller Jr. being used as the voice of Tarzoon)
“The World of Henry Orient” with Peter Sellers
Bill Murray. That brings back Groundhog Day (got really funny when he started exploring what he could do with no consequences) and Meatballs (the PA announcements, classic).
I agree on “The Waterboy” and “Back to School.” I have never seen the “Home Alone” movies and I know it’s funny, but “Caddyshack” just isn’t one of my favorites. I also like “The Wedding Singer,” but am shaking my head that I forgot one of my all time favorites: “Happy Gilmore”! How did I miss that one?
