My wife and I are having an argument. When she makes me a hamburger she insists on putting mayo on it. So we got into an argument over the proper condiments for hamburgers and hotdogs.
She insists on ketchup on her hotdogs. Mayo on her burgers. Mayo on hotdogs.
I believe ketchup has no business being on a dog (should be only some form of mustard) and hamburgers can get ketchup+mustard, but not mayo. Mayo is only for deli type sandwiches.
Opinions please.
Usually I assemble the burger/dog/sandwich myself, but occasionally she makes everything.
I always have my burgers with mayo and add one of my collection of gourmet hot sauces for good measure. Hot dogs, I like either Wal-Mart’s store-brand Southwestern style mustard (it’s sweet and spicy) and dill pickle relish, or will put salsa on the dog and melt cheese on top of that (usually end up eating the latter with a fork).
My mom loves mayo on her burgers. One of my kids loves ketchup on her hot dogs.
I think it is personal preference. However, I remember reading something about different condiments based on where you lived.
Hotdogs: yellow or deli mustard, diced cucumber, diced onion, diced tomato, celery salt.
Polish/Brat: Horseradish and kraut
Hamburger: yellow/deli/or horseradish mustard, bacon, sliced onion, sliced tomato, dill pickle, mayo on upper bun. ***optional BBQ sauce (hold dill pickle, mayo)
Almost forgot ... years ago I used to know somebody who put thousand island dressing on hot dogs. I had mine that way for a while, but sort of lost the taste for it and don’t think I could handle that anymore.

OK, ok, I'll get rid of the red onion slice and the roasted long hot pepper if they're that bad for you.
“...perhaps a bit of horseradish...”
Absolutely! In college when money was tight, we’d go to Herfy’s and buy the cheap, plain burgers and then hit the condiment bar. Lots of horseradish and you’ve got a meal.
Otherwise, mustard on both the burgers and the dogs. Mayo belongs on a tuna sandwich, nothing else.
Jalapenos and hot sauce on burgers, horseradish and hot mustard on dogs. No exceptions!
Is that your dog? My dog looks exactly like him. We don’t know what breed he is though. Any ideas?
My parents lived in Venezuela for many years. I wonder if that is where my mom came up with putting mayo on her burgers.
Now lets break them down.
Hot dog:
Ketchup is acceptable on a hot dog, but only if you are 12 years old or younger. At this point you have not yet developed the culinary savvy for condiments such as mustard. By your teens though ketchup is no longer acceptable and a minimum of French's mustard is required. If you have really matured you have moved on to the spicy mustards. (Jack Daniels makes some really good one's with my favorite having a hint of horseradish). Oh, one last thing. Brats are hot dogs on steroids and superior to all other forms of links.
Hamburgers:
Hamburgers have the advantage of versatility. You can come up with a thousand different combinations of condiments for them. Ironically, Mayo is not in a single one of them. Currently, I've been using lettuce, avacado, and salsa. Feel free to experiment and find combinations that work, but I guarentee Mayo works with NOTHING.
Ketchup and mustard on a burger, also on a dog. On a brat, only mustard.
Why would one adult care what condiments are put on another adults food? The word “Control Freak” comes to mind. I choose my battles and this is not one of them.
I prefer mustard on hotdogs maybe a tad of mayo...but no ketchup anywhere close.
You can also put a myraid of other stuff, like onions, relish, chili, kraut, cheese, jalapenas and such.
On burgers, mustard and maybe a tiny bit of mayo and anything else you can get on there. Tomatoes, onions, lettuce.....
Salt and pepper.
But leave off ketchup.
Ketchup is for french fries. But I actually like cocktail sauce better than ketchup.
Clouseau: Does your dog bite?
Hotel Clerk: No.
Clouseau: [bowing down to pet the dog] Nice doggie.
[Dog barks and bites Clouseau in the hand]
Clouseau: I thought you said your dog did not bite!
Hotel Clerk: That is not my dog.
********
And that is not my dog - I just found the photo on google and thought it was funny. Not really much of a dog person, but I’ll bet somebody will be along shortly who will know the breed...
Hot dog: Mustard or Mustard and Onions or Mustard, Onions and Relish
Hamburger: Pickles and Onions with Mustard....Lettuce and Tomatoes with Mayo.
“Try Thousand Island dressing on your hamburger.”
Isn’t that what the famous secret sauce is on Jack in the Box?
All fast food places put Mayo on hambugers so many people are just used to it. I have to tell them no mayo and have to check it before I leave. Half the time they get the order wrong.
“ketchup on her hotdogs. Mayo on her burgers. Mayo on hotdogs.”
I have a co-worker similar to that. We call him a Communist.
I grew up with ketchup on everything including burgers and hot dogs. Mayo has no business being near burgers or hot dogs. If it is to be used it should be in deli sandwiches or cole slaw.
As an adult I usually top my burgers with onions, tomatoes, lettuce (sometimes) and ketchup and/or mustard.
I usually put sauerkraut, onions, sharp mustard on my hot dogs.
