Might purchase a Smith & Wesson M&P 45 ACP
today | me

Posted on 09/08/2008 6:52:43 PM PDT by Grizzled Bear

My wife and I went gun shopping recently. I'm considering a Smith and Wesson MP 45. It will be my Birthday/Anniversary/Christmas present (although I'm hoping for a few boxes of ammo in my stocking).

I'm cautious about weapons that include plastic in their construction. Does anyone here have any practical, long term, experience with this model?

I have a S&W M&P 9mm compact. Love it. The M&P family of semi-autos are very popular. There were some magazine retention issues with the first run, I think, but if you get anything manufactured after 1/07 (or even before) you won’t have a problem. No experience with the 45, or with the full size. My 9mm compact has been great.

Advice? you’ll get plenty so I will start with: Get a Springfield XD. One hole gun out of the box. 14 rounds of .45ACP in your hand.

Specifically, I’ve had it 10 months and have run about 1500 rds through it. A handful of failures to feed, but only when I let it get really dirty.

If you want a Smith & Wesson revolver in .45 ACP, go to gunbroker.com and search for an original S&W Model 1917. They’re still found in excellent condition (I’ve bought three) and for half the cost of the `reintroduced’ Model 22.

And there’s no arguing with the punch of the ACP cartridge.

I don’t know a lot about the S&W autos, but I do favor the .45 caliber cartridge. I have both a Colt Officer’s model and a Glock G-36 in that caliber and both are a joy to shoot. I good friend of mine has a S&W 9 mm auto and says it shoots well. I have a couple of S&W revolvers - good guns as well.

I was looking at a 9mm for Mrs Bear. The dealer suggested a light weight 38 revolver instead (forget the model). I’ve done rapid malfunction clears. I’d rather not have her need to worry about it.

Her eyes lit up when she examined the weapon. I’m gonna keep her.

;-)

I was looking at the Springfield, the dealer favored the S&W (partly becuase it’s American made). He’s keeping the S&W under $500 for me.

Hey, Bear, good reading so far. I don’t have any experience with the Smith M&P pistols, and haven’t heard anything down here in my neck of the woods.

Hey, my, you know anyone with an M&P in .45?

The S&W full size .45 is heavy for long hours of carrying concealed.

The compact S&W .45 is comfy, a sweet shooter, and hasn’t much recoil.

According to the dealer, the Springfield XD is made in Croatia.

S&W? Cool.

Regarding that brand... I’ve got a S&W 20 ga. pump shotgun... crafted with pride in the U.S.A. ;-)

Only S&W auto I own is an old ASP conversion Mod 39 that has digested thousands of rounds, mostly 147gr OSM subsonic. It was a Paris Theodore custom way back when..... It holds up well ! My only other combat tupperware are glocks. Everything else in the safe is alloy or steel etc ......

I love S&W wheel guns yet do not own a S&W auto aside from the ASP.

Hope you get good mileage and reliability out of your new handgun !

Stay Safe !

The S&W M&P in any of its variations is an excellent performer. There are a couple of 45 variations. The Standard and the Gov't Model. The Standard has changable backstrap, Ambi controls and is very slim. The Gov't has all the same features and an ambi thumb safety, a la the 1911.

Quite a few PD's are changing from the Glock .40 cal variations to the S&W. The chamber is fully supported in all the calibers.

I personally own a S&W 45 M&P and LOVE it.

Very accurate for the caliber. Great trigger. I’ve put thousands of rounds through the thing with only 1 malfunction and that was a failure to prime - round was indented nicely, so I’d say it was the ammo.

Very solid construction. And remember - despite the lower assembly having plastic, it actually it plastic OVER steel for some part.
