Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick
Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.
At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."
Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.
A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."
[snipped]
She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.
"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

Top 10 Things To Do When You Become Unemployed
Posted: 02 Dec 2008 01:23 AM CST
With the American economy (and many others in the world) potentially on the verge of collapse we are all subject to being out of a job any minute. One day were working, paying the bills and enjoying happy hour. The next day we are unemployed and panic is starting to set in. Dont worry! Here is my Top 10 List of Things You Should Do When You Are Suddenly Unemployed. If you have extra tips for people who have lost their job or are going to lose their job, please add them in the comments.
10
Apply for Un-Employment Insurance
Unemployment Line-749345
If you were downsized or fired then go to your local unemployment office and apply. You may qualify for months of unemployment compensation. If you quit your job then it may be harder to collect but try anyway. They can also help you to write a resume and find a new job.
9
Assess your finances
Personal-Finance-180-3-709764
Make sure you can pay the rent and buy food until you find another job. If need be, cancel the fancy HBO cable TV package or start buying the no-name breakfast cereal. Get on a payment plan for other bills if you can. You dont know when you will get a paycheck again so start hoarding the money you have. You may need to get a part-time job before you get a full-time job of your choice. Swallow your pride and do what needs to be done.
8
Update your resume
Application
Include all skills and education you have and show potential employers what you have done in quantifiable and measurable terms. Never lie on a resume, but puffing your accomplishments within reason is acceptable. Only include references that you know will speak highly of you. Include key words that will get the future employers attention. Most resumes are scanned by computers so a good trick to use is customize the resume and cover letter for the specific job you are applying for. Use the same words companies use in the job description such as, Self-Starter or Proven Results. They will be picked up by the computer and get your resume moved to the top of the pile.
7
Network
Networking Professionals
Ok, you want to stay low key and not let everyone know you are unemployed. You have to do just the opposite and let everyone know you are looking for a job. Networking is the #1 way people find jobs. Let your working friends and family know that you are looking for and need a job now. Everyone has been in your situation before and knows what it is like. Be honest and get them a copy of your resume. They can usually help you directly or refer you to someone else that is hiring.
6
Relax
Relax
Use this time to reassess your career choices, catch up on some reading or just veg in front of the TV for a few days. You dont have to get up at 6am anymore to drive in rush hour traffic to get to work by 8am. Take a walk, smell the coffee, play with the kids. Give your mind a chance to recharge and re-evaluate your life. Maybe a new career is what you need. Maybe even a new city. The point is, take this down time to sit back and enjoy your vacation. Youll be back to work soon enough and your next vacation will be a year away.
5
Keep in Touch with Co-Workers
Business Lunch
Your ex-boss or co-workers may be able to keep you abreast of re-hire opportunities at your former company. If the decision is made later to bring back former employees, you may be considered if you have kept in contact with with your bosses or peers.
4
Get Healthy
Exercise
You always used the excuse I dont have enough time to exercise or eat right. Even though there was a state-of-the-art gym in your previous office building, you never used it. Now is the time to hit the treadmill or take a jog in the park. Use that neighborhood gym membership one more month (before you have to cancel it because youre broke). Since you have less money you should be eating out less. Get the fast food out of your diet altogether. Set a goal and try to lose those pounds or inches off your waist so you look great for your next job.
3
Do volunteer work
Volunteerworkii
Not only will volunteering help others in your community that need it, you can add that experience to your resume. It is also a form of networking. You may meet someone working at a hospital or homeless shelter that can offer you a paying gig.
2
Surf the web
Large Wireless
While searching for jobs on sites such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com, you will no doubt stray into other areas of interest such as political news, sports, music, etc. Thats ok, but try to stay away from too many recreational sites (especially porn). Its ok to be up to date on the latest music, fashions or other crazes, but dont get sidetracked too often. However, I do recommend a daily dose of List Universe. The things you will learn on this site will enlighten you tremendously.
1
Stay Positive
Old-Man-Laughing
Dont beat yourself up about your situation. It probably happened for a good reason. You know you didnt like that old job anyway! Now its time to move on to the next phase of your life. Go to church, mosque or synagogue and pray on it. If you are not religious then just meditate and focus on the positive and dont feel like you are worthless or a loser. This is a time in your life to build your character up and show the world what you are really made of!

Gbaby is too old for a bottle. Whew!<<<
The other answer is “Get a Goat”.
I did not know about goat milk for my daughter, but in her day it was Carnation Evaporated Milk, water and Karo Syrup for a formula.......then they invented the soy formulas and look at the change in children.
My daughter moved back home when the baby was about a month old, I objected to the soy crap and on that formula, she had an upset stomach all the time.
I talked to the local doctor, Dr. Kline said “you have goats, put her on goat milk”...No way Debra hated goats.
Dr. Kline said, “One of these days she will run out the door and yell, “you fix her formula, I gotta go”, when that happens call me and I will tell you what to do .....
Yep, that day came, as I recall he said to heat the milk, add Karo and cool it.
I did and for the next year that I had her, she had only one fretting day, [the day a ‘city doctor’ gave her baby shots] and
there was never another upset stomach, she was so happy and people could not pass her by, without a smile.
Then Deb took her and moved to Hawaii and put her on cow milk and I do not think Lisa was ever pleasant again.
My thought on the wire cage for growing.....here it will not work, it will dry out too fast.
A solid wall would work, LOL, first to mind was some way to stack cement double blocks, that could be fun, if one left some of the blocks sticking out like an arm, you can drop about a 5 inch pot of herbs in there to grow.
Maybe that is how to get the hole in the wall for the pots....turn one sideways and you would have a hole, but the next would be in the normal block wall style.
This year, most people used barrels and old tires to stack and grow pots in.
That wire cage in the photo, does work for a ‘personal’ compost bin, when one is not good with the giant compost bins.
Make the same wire cage, make sure it will stand and not fall over and plant around it.......you will throw leaves, weeds, and once in a while well rotted manure on top of it and water it in.......instant compost tea.....and is my way of making compost, old trash cans work fine, if there is no bottom in them, and one day you tilt them and and dump the black gold out.
My best and favorite is a large cone about 3 foot tall and almost that diameter, I sit it in the greenhouse or yard bed and plant all around it.........when I wound up with a couple rabbits, I set the cage on top of it, so they gave it manure daily and when I watered, I stuck the hose in the cone and let it make tea every time, as I pulled weeds, etc, I stuck them in the cone and fed some to the rabbits.
Bill drew a line of refusal, when I asked for a pulley set up full length of the greenhouse, to hang rabbit cages on and move them each day, so they kept adding manure all over.
Sounded like a good idea to me, rabbit factory at the source, fish in the barrels of water, I posted something on that early in the thread......and a goat...for that I bought the seeds of weeds such as amaranth that will grow to 6 foot and can be used for hay....
No wonder folks call me nuts.
In Britain they say the water is contaminated with birth control chemicals and that Viagra-type components are starting to be found in fish.<<<
This is happening on the east coast and in several areas.
There was a report a few months ago, of a woman cooking a fish and her 10 year old daughter said she did not want to eat the pills, they found several pills in the fish, I don’t remember if they knew what kind? The Gov was investigating.
When you sit down to plan your garden, spend a little time figuring out how to grow the most nutrition, and flavor, for the last amount of money and effort. This will help ensure you continue to have food even during times of poverty.<<<
I was surprised at how little I know about the important food values, when I ordered from Walton Feed.com, they have a section called “Read my Label”, the link is inside the catalog of foods.
Omega 3 has been on my list for years, as I recall Purslane is
one weed that is high in it, I got the seeds at Nichols garden nursery and they cover this type of info in some of the descriptions.
When we get back up to the mountain we are going to start stocking up on food, and I am going to learn to can the food we grow. This situation is crazy. I want to be as self sufficient as possible and learn to live on one salary so I can stay home and take care of my garden and my home and my family.<<<
An excellent plan and one that I have pushed for 40 years, as you never know when a partner will get sick, and not be able to work.
Bill came home in the middle of the morning, said “will you take me to the hospital, I think I am having a heart attack”.
He was and it was two years before he could do light work.

I love goats, already shared that with you! I wonder how people ever got started drinking cow’s milk in the first place? My gpa was a sickly baby and they raised him on mare’s milk. Or so I’m told. :)
Sorry about your gdaughter. :(

It doesn’t take much to make these shoes...just scraps of fabric, some interfacing, elastic. The only thing that might be hard to find is the bonded fleece for the sole. It’s suede on one side and fleece on the other. I got mine at Joann’s. They sell it for $19.99/yard, which seems steep, but I bought a half a yard and used my 40% coupon, and I have enough to make a TON of shoes! If you can’t find it, I’d be glad to arrange a swap for some of mine. You might be able to get away with fusing a couple of layers of felt and/or fleece together, but I’ve found the bonded fleece to be super soft, yet sturdy. The best for soles by far. Sorry, am I going on and on?
I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Post pictures of your completed shoes at the cloth shoes flickr group.
p.s. Thanks again to Ohelene for the inspiration. If you are interested in making leather shoes, check out her pattern here.

There is a photo and several hidden links to the patterns....
As I do not willingly click hidden links, you will need to get your own patterns.
This is the basic pattern for shoes that my friend Mary made for me to wear for several years, when I could not wear regular shoes.
Many of our supplies were ‘found’ and all were recycled, I do not recall ever having a pair that we ‘bought the material for’.
Mary used old Levi’s for the soles, old wool coats, skirts, etc for the inside and pretty scraps for the outside parts.
They are washable.
When I had my shop, so many people wanted them for a simple house shoe, and others with arthritis in the feet wanted a pair.
And so Mary at 80 years old found herself in the shoe making business, we had them in all sizes.
Take a look at the shoe, you may want to remember what they looked like some day.
The year that I had all the small kids for Christmas, we made them robes with ‘shoes to match’.

Hi there lovely ladies (and possibly a gent or two)...my name is Abraham Owl and I will be guest blogging for LollyChops today. She plum wore herself out from sewing all day long yesterday and called in a panic asking that I write up a post for her. I graciously accepted and decided to do a post on my favorite subject. Me.
In this post I will chronicle the story of my life. My rocky tumultuous beginnings through the dramatic turn of events that lead me to meet the woman of my dreams. I promise not to leave a single detail out. You might laugh. You might cry....regardless... you will not leave with an empty heart.
