Home gardening offers ways to trim grocery costs [Survival Today, an on going thread]

Americans finding soaring food prices hard to stomach can battle back by growing their own food. [Click image for a larger version] Dean Fosdick Dean Fosdick

Home vegetable gardens appear to be booming as a result of the twin movements to eat local and pinch pennies.

At the Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta this winter, D. Landreth Seed Co. of New Freedom, Pa., sold three to four times more seed packets than last year, says Barb Melera, president. "This is the first time I've ever heard people say, 'I can grow this more cheaply than I can buy it in the supermarket.' That's a 180-degree turn from the norm."

Roger Doiron, a gardener and fresh-food advocate from Scarborough, Maine, said he turned $85 worth of seeds into more than six months of vegetables for his family of five.

A year later, he says, the family still had "several quarts of tomato sauce, bags of mixed vegetables and ice-cube trays of pesto in the freezer; 20 heads of garlic, a five-gallon crock of sauerkraut, more homegrown hot-pepper sauce than one family could comfortably eat in a year and three sorts of squash, which we make into soups, stews and bread."

She compares the current period of market uncertainty with that of the early- to mid-20th century when the concept of victory gardens became popular.

"A lot of companies during the world wars and the Great Depression era encouraged vegetable gardening as a way of addressing layoffs, reduced wages and such," she says. "Some companies, like U.S. Steel, made gardens available at the workplace. Railroads provided easements they'd rent to employees and others for gardening."

I am thankful you missed the hurricane, and imagine that you have seen your share.

I am hearing that there is still hope for the stock market.

Maybe you should buy a cow, before the price goes up, due to inflation....LOL

I sit here and imagine the color in your gardens, guess I love all plants.

Me, too. We’ve had way worse thunderstorms this summer than what we got out of Hanna. I hate the way the weathermen blow everything all out of proportion! It’s hard to trust anything they say, even when they have pics.

I wouldn’t have the slightest idea where to buy a cow anymore! LOL Haven’t seen one, other than a few beef cattle some old farmer is using for pasture ornaments, in longer than I can remember. It would cost me more to feed it than I would ever get out of it, milk or beef. Shaking head. :)

Every day they say 20% chance of rain, and it does not.

Then it all comes at once.

If I were thinking of milk, I would buy a goat, its milk is better for you ...

You can feed 6 goats on the amount that it takes to feed one cow.

Even 30 years ago, we had to know someone, who knew someone who had a cow for sale.

Then the real trouble starts, as Mrs. Cow wants to visit with Mr. Bull once a year and they are often fed hot feeds and not worth a darn for making calves.

And if you are a woman, the men will not talk to you about breeding your animals.

I owned a prize winner Nubian Billy Goat with ‘papers’.

Men would call Bill about using him for breeding, his standard answer was “You will have to talk to my wife, it is her goat”, many of them would not.

Arizona is fringe south, you will really have problems.

That is a wonderful photo.

From the looks of it, this is a ‘normal occurrence’, as there is a lot of naked branches on that tree.

It almost looks like the pulls off some of the branches for the horse, as there is one in his mouth, or he found a weed.

Yes, the goat could jump on his back, but it is possible that he kneels and lets it climb on.

I would love to watch the full show.

Thanks for sharing.

Food Safety and Imports: An Analysis of FDA Import Refusal Report

Food Safety and Imports: An Analysis of FDA Import Refusal Reports
Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

This report examines U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) data on refusals of food offered for importation into the United States from 1998 to 2004. Although the data do not necessarily reflect the distribution of risk in foods, the study found that import refusals highlight food safety problems that appear to recur in trade and where the FDA has focused its import alerts, examinations (e.g., sampling), and other monitoring efforts. The data show some food industries and types of violations may be consistent sources of problems both over time and in comparison with previous studies of more limited data. The three food industry groups with the most violations were vegetables (20.6 percent of total violations), fishery and seafood (20.1 percent), and fruits (11.7 percent). Violations observed over the entire time period include sanitary issues in seafood and fruit products, pesticides in vegetables, and unregistered processes for canned food products in all three industries.

LOL! I don’t know whether to believe it or not! If I were a horse and a goat jumped on my back, I would be trotting off!

Great image all the same...the horse is standing there quitely while the goat eats the leaves. If the horse wasn’t happy about that he could easily dislodge the goat with just one little buck, and off the goat would come.

The more I learn about people (in politics) the more I love animals, even rats and mice and lizards and snakes...

What!?! Why is there a goat in the house?<<<

Kitty’s next thoughts:

Well there goes my milk!

Maybe Mama Goat is going to take over my bed!

Couldn’t they get a dog?

That is an excellent photo and captures goats to a “T”, they are more nosy than cats.

They actually make good house pets, we were building the family room, when we had a big snow storm and a Nanny ready to give birth.

Of course she had troubles and a friend came and we brought her into the family room, and pulled the kids and kept her in, to be warm and so I could watch them.

It was getting a flagstone floor and half the floor was still dirt.

Seemed like a good idea at the time and actually it was, as long as, once all the lights were turned off and the family was in bed.

If someone got up during the night, so did Mama, she raised caine, until the lights were out and we were back in bed.

I think she thought we were meant to sleep the night through and then too there was the chance we would wake up her babies.

It did take some getting used too, if you went in the kitchen, she would stick her head in, over the barrier Bill put up to keep her in the one room and she would fuss.........

The weatherman lies—he lies, he lies, he lies, and he gets paid to do it! LOL Standard summer forecast here is—hot, hazy, humid with a chance of afternoon thunderboomer. The weatherman might as well take the summer off, here, anyway!

I think that’s why they get so excited at even the hint of a hurricane!

I love goats, and have had milk goats/toggenburgs. Not much grass around here to feed cows, we have really sandy soil, and what grass there is doesn’t have much nutrition. Milking anything is great—if you could just do it when you needed milk! Twice a day, 365 gets old fast, esp if you have to work, and my crowd doesn’t like goat milk anyway. Sigh.

Men are such strange creatures sometimes, aren’t they? We sell chainsaws and trimmers and lawnmowers at the garden center, and guys will come in, I’ll tell tehm something, and they’ll say no—I want to talk to the man. Granted, he knows a lot more than I do, but I can tell them basic stuff!

Heaven forbid a man come in with a chainsaw with the safety brake on. All it requires to fix it is flipping a lever. Oh no. I carry it out to the shop, hand it to Wally and say, here—brake’s on. You tell him. LOL

LOL, now you have confused me.

Laughing, I see the cute kitty, she is related to the ones here.

I can’t decide if behind the kitty there is a horse or a pig.

The white sheep skin or fleece, I know.

What is that brown thing? A Kangaroo?

It looks like it has flippers, so that is a seal family, fur of a Kangaroo and the head of an Ant Eater....

Is it dead or alive?
