General Casimir Pulaski (1745-1779)

After surviving numerous bloody campaigns against Russia, Count Casimir Pulaski retired to France in 1777, bitterly disappointed and deeply depressed at Poland's failure to defeat her foes.

In Paris, Pulaski met Benjamin Franklin who was recruiting volunteers to fight in America's War of Independence. Mindful that England had recommended that Poland be partitioned by her hostile neighbors in 1772, Pulaski enthusiastically responded to Franklin's plea for assistance. In his letter of introduction to Washington, Franklin wrote of Pulaski as "an officer famous throughout Europe for his bravery and conduct in defense of the liberties of his country against ... great invading powers".

While awaiting his formal appointment by Congress, Pulaski was invited by Washington to serve on his staff during the Battle of Brandywine in September, 1777. Pulaski's performance during this baptism of blood in America earned him a commission as Brigadier General of the entire American cavalry.

In 1779, Pulaski was ordered to join General Lincoln in the South to help recapture Savannah. After French General D'Estaing, leader in the attack on the southern capital, fell wounded, Pulaski is reported to have rushed forward to assume command and raise the soldiers' spirits by his example and courage, only to be mortally wounded himself. Pulaski was named the "Father of the American Cavalry", and remains one of the well known figures of the American Revolutionary War. There is hardly a state in America without a county or town, street or square, monument or tablet, school or highway named in grateful memory of General Casimir Pulaski.

Maryland state route 40 bisects Baltimore north and south.

It's known locally as Route 40 East and Route 40 West.

And it's also called Pulaski Highway.

Books in boxes. Books in racks.
Books in hallways. Books in stacks.
Books on shelves and closets tall.
Books on every patch of wall.

Books where sunlight makes them fade.
Books around that I’ve mislaid.
Books my wife has gathered in.
Books beginning now to win.

Taking over in my life,
Books now keep me from my wife.
In the doorway of the den,
Stacks of books have grown again.

I go around the other way,
Easing back to hit the hay.
Unless subtly they have crept,
Into the space where once I slept.

Striving now to find a nook,
Not encumbered by a book,
I subside into my chair,
To find a book is waiting there.

Some few minutes reading now,
Will help me with my sleep somehow.
And when I nod and stiffly wake,
I’ve lost my place, for Heaven’s Sake!

I had to do a Google search on Pulaski.

I had no idea who he was. I do not know whether we have a Pulaski anything in Fresno.

Your weather gizmo is saying 67 degrees, but it feels more like 75 to me. It’s been a beautiful day here. I got over-heated in the car with all the running around I did today, but it actually felt really good to be overly warm for a change.

I think we have pretty much had our rain for the year. We may get one of two thunderstorms before the 1st of June. That is when the weather year starts.

Earlier today the weather gizmo said 69. If you were out for any amount of time, I bet it was warm.

I love this weather. Do you have a weather gadget on your new computer? I have mine set for Sanger weather. The one I post here is at a site that I’ve had the link to for at least 5 years. MeeknMing used to use it.

Do you have a weather gadget on your new computer?

Do you mean on my desktop? No, I have some gadgets that my son added, one is a couple of gages that look like tachometers on a car dashboard. They each have a red zone and a dial that continually fluctuates. I have no idea what they indicate. And if my dial goes into the red zone I have no idea what to do. LOL. But, no weather gadget. I do have one on my profile page here that I picked up somewhere. It shows the weather for Visalia. And I have one that shows the weather in Tampere, Finland where my foreign exchange daughter lives. It is 21 degrees there. YIKES!

That type of weather is what keeps me in Sunny California.

I can’t do anything fancy with graphics. I can add borders, change colors, resize and add text.

I would love to be able to do 1/4 of what MamaBear and Billie do. I think I need to start practicing.

MEGA search in my favorites and files ..no luck ..I finally found my favorite Super Bowl National Anthem..I must have it saved on a now dead computer...I did a search and finally found it by googling

I love books and reading. The first book that opened the doors of literature for me as a young girl was Jane Eyre. I am currently visiting Paris by way of “The Da Vinci Code”. It’s the only way I will ever “see” it, as I have no desire to ever set foot in France. But this journey through Paris in search of the Holy Grail is very interesting.
