Just Flew in From Atlanta and Had to Share...

I was on a 5:45 PM flight from Atlanta to Newark, NJ on Delta tonight. As I went to my seat in row 44, I passed by a young man in fatigues (he was in row 42) and, as any Freeper would do, thanked him for his service and asked him if he was going to be home for the holidays. He said "yes I will be" and I wished him a merry Christmas and took my seat.
As we were landing, the flight attendant said that we had a young army man just back from Iraq who was coming home to his wife and two kids for the holidays and could we all remain seated so he could get off the plane first.
The entire plane erupted in applause (he was a bit embarrassed in his humility), but when the plane got to the gate NO ONE MOVED and he got off first to ANOTHER round of applause.

Back in July, I was flying out of Bangor, ME and I had the honor of welcoming a group of soldiers in from Iraq, and then wishing them well as they left Bangor towards home with the
Maine Troop Greeters. This is an experience I doubt I'll ever forget. The site is well worth visiting and this group is worthy of support.

Just flew in from Atlanta—and boy are my arms tired!-—was my first thought when I saw your ping.
So glad you shared this story. Worked in Newark for many years—good to hear that some NJ folks still have class.

I had the same thoughts as did you re how many libs might have been on the plane. And, the flight from Atlanta at that time likely had mostly northeasterners, rather than Peach Staters...
With that being said, the applause was hearty rather than scattered and as I looked around essentially everyone was clapping.

I wonder if there were any anti-war libs on board who were just stewing in their seats... You can bet on it -- but who the hell cares about that rabble?

Thanks for sharing — I love stories like this. I’ve had the pleasure of being able to thank two Iraq vets so far, and what has always struck me about them was their humility and honor. God Bless them!
