Genetic analysis has revealed the contents of an ancient shipwreck dating back to the era of the Roman Republic and Athenian Empire. The cargo was olive oil flavored with oregano.
Beyond discovering ingredients for Italian salad dressing on the sea floor, such research could provide a wealth of insights concerning the everyday life of ancient seafaring civilizations that would otherwise be lost at sea.
An international team of U.S. and Greek researchers investigated the remains of a 2,400-year-old shipwreck that lies 230 feet (70 meters) deep, roughly a half-mile (1 kilometer) off the coast of the Greek island of Chios in the Aegean Sea.

Salad ping to you.
Like, duh!
The fact that we detected DNA of olives may mean that Chios exported more than wine," Foley said. "Their agricultural production might have been more sophisticated than we've suspected."
Duh, again. I amazes me how these guys are always surprised when they find out mankind before their generation didn't live in caves.

I’m sorry, were you a-dressing me? [rimshot!] Because I’m ornery this morning, I won’t be pinging the older one shown below, because I feel left out of the loop. ;’)

No sign yet of skeletons of the crou’.
“Eve! You put my dress suit in the salad again!”
Which reminds me. When I quit one of my jobs, my teammates took me out to a Chinese restaurant in the suburbs. When the waitress, who wasn’t Chinese, asked what kind of dressing I wanted on my salad that came with the meal, I began to question of I was in a Chinese restaurant.
Of course, there was a much better known shipwreck involving an entire shipment of salad dressing: the Sinko de Mayo.
I’ve had better salad days too.
How the heck is a search on “Team IDs Ancient Cargo From DNA” going to find any matches in “Ingredients for Salad Dressing Found in 2,400-year-old Shipwreck” ??
The limitations of the search feature is just the tip of the iceberg ...lettuce forget this small dressing down, K? ;)
Snearing at our ancestors will be our comeuppance.
If you took 10,000 NY residents and stuck them in the Amazon - they would be hard-pressed to find edible vegetation, fashion tools to kill game, or for food preparation, minerals or spices for preservation and the ability to create fire for warmth and cooking.
Would they be able to hoard seeds for future seasons, raise livestock and develop transportation for hauling and harvesting. Not to mention manufacturing clothing and shelter
And forget experimental medicines to treat fever or wounds.
We are at the end of evolution....should we restart the cycle?
Hmmmm...Olive Oyl...was the Admiral named Popeye?
A tragic end for a three hour cruise in the salad days of yore oar Man o’War.
I question the timing, Gilligan.
GROAN!!!! Good one!
